It's amazing the reach of the U.S. Civil War pension system. I'm now up to at least five off-shore Irish islands where 19th century U.S. pensions were being paid- Achill, Arranmore, Bere, Inishmore and Inisheer. They weren't as isolated and removed from the world as we sometimes might think.

On the eve of #aras25, I’m revising my chapter for the new edition of The Irish Presidency. A favourite detail: deliberations took place between 1938 & 1939 on an appropriate car that would give the president space to remove a top hat in a dignified way. The winner? A burgundy Chrysler limousine!
