I just spent way too long optimizing the bee swarm. Totally worth it though! The swarm now chases the player much more aggressively, even during jumps. And because I’m a nice person, I also added a short warning right before the bees attack.

Besides the little pile of crap, I added some walls and bombs on the path. Reaching the goal won’t be easy without the right upgrades.

What’s also not easy: balancing all of this fairly. But that’s a whole different topic …

Proof of concept for my 2d hard infinite shadows. Eventually I'm going to turn them into soft shadows and also have the vegetation cast and receive shadows... but it's gonna be a different technique. For smaller objects I don't want the shadow to be infinite ;) #gamedev #solodev #indiedev #shadows

My love for chunky pixels comes at a price: debugging at a resolution of 320×180 gets messy pretty fast. Solution: make no bugs, so there’s nothing to debug. :P

Warning! I’m currently implementing some of the feedback from the first playtest.
One request (among many) was to get a visual warning before the gnome shoot. A quick fix! As a bonus, the falcon now gets a warning too. End of warning!

First guerilla playtest at a friend’s birthday party. Findings: nobody reads text, snails get collected instead of jumped over, and everyone dies (way too) fast! Plenty of room for improvement! (The chocolate cake was delicious, btw)

I worked on the score and message system for my (not-so-small-anymore) mini-game. There’s now a countdown at the start, a silly remark when you crash, and praise plus a big bonus for reaching the finish line.

Useful: My game now shows miniature icons of the selected upgrade cards in the HUD.

Not useful, but fun to look at: the new level indicator starts fluttering when you go fast on your hobby horse.

This. But also, remember that passion alone doesn't pay the bills. Most indies underprice their games, are ignored by algorithms, undersold, some even unfairly blocked from selling... So check that your money actually moves in the direction you want people surviving and making things.

I’m currently reworking some of my older pixel art animations and adapting them to the 9:16 format. With the T-Rex animation from 2015, I just couldn’t resist adding sound effects. You know … immersion and all that.
