Project Gutenberg is one of those places that exemplifies what the internet was initially all about: studying, preserving, and celebrating the arts, especially the written word, and Greg Newby was a huge part of that.

Thank you, Greg, and rest well.
We are deeply saddened by the loss of Greg Newby, who led Project Gutenberg ( @gutenberg.org ) with passion and purpose. Greg’s belief in free and open access to knowledge continues to inspire us and so many others working to preserve our shared culture online. gutenberg.org/about/newby....

Along with 14 other scholars, archivists, designers, business leaders, and engineers I shared my thoughts on DEEP TIME DATA ARCHIVES for the @harvardlil.bsky.social Generational Data project with @maxy.bsky.social and Clare Stanton.

What data, if any, should be stored for a century? Who decides? 💎

I made a little toy for exploring and mixing mathematically possible backbeat rhythms!

In a 2-beat 16th-note grid with kick/snare/hat, there are 1,458 combinations. And in combination, there are 2,125,764 ways to fill in a 4/4. Enjoy playing ALL of them here:

CHOTINER: So you wrote how many symphonies?
BRAHMS: Four
CHOTINER: And Beethoven wrote nine
BRAHMS: Well, yes, but—
CHOTINER: Mozart wrote over forty
BRAHMS: Symphony numbering was different then, and also he died at thirty-five—
CHOTINER: So you had more time than Mozart

I think the main lesson I’ve learned from watching a lot of opera vids is that it’s okay to have a lot of merely serviceable music as long as you have a few real bangers
