This is a holiday reminder that you do not owe emotional labour or intimacy to people just because they’re biologically related to you. Spend time with those who nourish you and separate from those who degrade your existence. Today and every day.

I was glad to present on a panel with @hannems.bsky.social and @rosadluxe.bsky.social for International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers at St Anne's Church in Soho earlier, with excellent audience engagement, a collaborative event to challenge the harms of criminalisation and stigmatisation.

Today is International Day to End Violence Against Sex Workers.
Laws that criminalise sex work don’t prevent sex work, they just make it more difficult for sex workers to work safely.

It was an absolute pleasure to present my book, Queering UK Refugee Law: Sexual Diversity and Asylum Administration, at the University of Exeter last night. Thanks so much to Ben Hudson and The Routes Network for hosting and to Raawiyah Rifath for acting as discussant.

I permit @apowelllaw.bsky.social to force me to watch one rom-com per annum (usually at this time of year) but I'm demanding that it has to be at least vaguely "queer" this year. Any recommendations? 💘

I know it's become increasingly difficult to make assignments 100% AI-proof, but I think most of the tasks I set (podcasts, video essays, poster presentations, observation reports) are hard enough to "fake" that the authenticity and originality of student thinking is fairly easy (and joyful) to see!

I think Transactual put it best (in reference to the girl guides) and now Labour too:

"There is no problem being solved here, only harm being done."

All to appease the right, who hate them anyway - shame on them.

The more @zackpolanski.bsky.social connects with people, the more the attacks come

Time to join the movement of hope 🙏🏽

All in one day:

Immigration Minister lied about me with a slur.

Wes Streeting then tried a different attack.

And the Evening Standard write yet another attack piece because I dare to say we need to tax the rich.

Still quite upset about last night's "immigration special" where a Home Office Minister said this. There's no reason to vote Labour anymore unless you're a racist. What else is the point of them?
I found the unfiltered fascism from Reform and Labour, calling migrants "rapists and paedophiles" (the Trump playbook) disgusting on #BBCQT tonight. As @zackpolanski.bsky.social said, "we need to change the conversation on migration", it's a diversionary moral panic from the issues affecting people.

This semester has been one of my busiest yet most enjoyable, a return to teaching across the sociology of gender and sexuality! There's plenty of marking left to do (mainly video essays, in preparation for the festive season's screen binge) but I won't be back on campus until the end of January. 📑📺🎉

Another reminder that Polanski is the best antidote we have for Farage, here's something I wrote for Metro (over 6 years ago now)! Choose hope, love and unity over fear, hate and division.
