their plainly stated goal is to starve forty million people until they get what they want, which is to rip health care away from millions more

that this is too monstrous for most news organizations to tell the truth about does not change the facts
The USDA sent an email to grocery stores telling them they are prohibited from offering special discounts to customers affected by the SNAP funding lapse.
I'm aware of at least 2 stores that had offered struggling customers a discount, then withdrew it after receiving this email

This idea of Australian exceptionalism in the face of surging fascism is ridiculous. We are already worse than the US on so many fronts: immigration, speech. Our Labor government is signing us to the deepest alliance with the US since WW2, using our money to rebuild Trump's military. Get real.

This is a bizarre thing to publish on the day the federal court awarded a journalist $220,000 for being unfairly dismissed from an on-air role for their political views.

In Australia it isn't just private companies that cave to pressure, it's the public broadcaster

Why Jimmy Kimmel would have never been cancelled in Australia
We need to be careful about how we separate true hate speech from satirical speech. In America, it seems, differentiation is out of favour.

“He’s fucking me”

And the rest of the quote apparently is “and I like it”
Donald Trump is reportedly frustrated with Benjamin Netanyahu after Israel’s strikes in Qatar, telling senior aides that “he’s fucking me”, according to the Wall Street Journal

Despite this, the report noted that Trump is unlikely to publicly split with Netanyahu

it is really important for news outlets to be clear (unlike the nyt here) that Kimmel was suspended not because of some grassroots backlash but because ABC caved to threats from the head of the FCC

Defending trans people is obviously morally just and ethical. Beyond that it just is tactically the correct thing to do because the GOP is going to say the same thing about Dems no matter what and either you can respond with 'well my opponent has some points' or 'look at this hateful shit'
cnn.com CNN @cnn.com · Aug 9
Republicans are reprising a key attack line from last year’s presidential race for elections this year and next – betting that anti-trans messaging will help them counter Democrats running on GOP-led cuts to Medicaid and other parts of Trump’s policy megabill.
Republicans reprise anti-transgender ‘Kamala is for they/them’ ads for the midterms | CNN Politics
Shortly after former North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper announced his plans to run for Senate, a group backing Republicans released an ad with an echo of last year’s presidential campaign.

I found the original Cheek Media most to be incoherent and very weird, but a federal politician being bullied by the far-right into unliking an Instagram post, and putting a media release out about it, is a grim reflection on who controls discourse and culture right now.

the mainstream media and most of the Democratic party are gutless cowards too terrified of guns to stand up to the far right. So they never face any real push-back. but it does feel like the constant rhetorical escalations are turning into a kind of white noise

Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars.

OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.

The bigger point is that facts/logic don't matter, these racist attacks on migrants aren't grounded in rationality, they never have been. But that doesn't mean you just throw out a ridiculous figure you have to backtrack from a week later, when the damage is done.

The "85% of Indian Australians vote for Labor" figure obviously absurd, and you need to question the rationale of a pollster going on a stream hosted by two prominent anti-immigration activists to share it. www.smh.com.au/politics/fed...
Senior Liberal texts colleagues to clean up Price’s Indian migrant data claims
Senator Jacinta Nampijinpa Price cited data saying 85 per cent of Indian migrants voted Labor. The pollster behind the statistic has had to clarify those figures.
