Hey #believeinfilm friends,

A new hand-held (!) large format camera with an SLR finder blew past its goal on Kickstarter within days in the busiest holiday months.

It's called Smartflex: www.analog.cafe/comments/8o4l

Love the idea, but it's certainly not cheap.

Smartflex, a lightweight 4x5 SLR, launched and reached its goal on Kickstarter within just a few days.
The camera weighs just over 2kg/4.4lb and uses a segmented mirror system to solve “the major issue of short flange distance lenses while ensuring no light leaks.” It uses a 5x5” horizontal ground-glas...

Top tip for large format camera focusing. Rather than struggling with a loupe, use the camera on a mobile phone and zoom in as much as you want - with a bright screen too!

I don't think I've ever talked on Bluesky about why I hate the Foo Fighters and Dave Grohl.

Don't read any further unless you're prepared for uncomfortable truths about the "Nicest Guy in Rock", and his very substantial body count & subsequent cover-up.

I have a “new” camera. A 13x18 mentor with built in shutter. It is a beautiful heavy beast. Also I don’t have the right sized film so I’m using masking tape to attach attach 4x5 film to the film holder. Today we visited hellfire cave. The photos were not very successful. I learnt a lot.

At Wembley watching motley crue and def leppard. An all seater event. While motley crue sang anarchy in the uk and fight for your right to party we were politely told to get back to our allocated seats or we would be ejected.

I dragged out the 4x5 on Friday.

There may only be 12 people on Bluesky but I'm going to make sure that each and every one of you has seen the Good Omens 2 trailer before we're done here. And yes that means you too. Don't think I can't see you back there.

I live near a small nature reserve / park called Snakey Lane in which there is a beautiful pond that I have been meaning to photo for ages. I wanted a nice high contrast scene with a deep depth of focus.

Made a new lensboard on our cnc router. Did not get the level perfect so a bit thick on one side. Easy fix with sandpaper.

I’m learning large format photography by trial and error. This is me working on focal planes and zone metering. Not quite there but still satisfying. Infuriatingly my shutter jams on exposures longer than 1/20 second. #itap

I’ve been learning more about managing focus with swing on large format cameras. Also practicing zone metering. Looking forward to see how they develop.

I’ve got a date tonight. She is smart, beautiful and a fantastic mum to our three kids. I hope to marry her some day.
