Excellent article but stark reminder that for all the perceptions of universities as ivory towers for elites, they are actually vital hubs in towns n cities supporting local businesses and providing key services as well as education….
‘If I think about what this means, I want to cry’: what happens when a city loses its university?
When Essex University’s Southend campus opened, it was a message of hope for a ‘left behind’ UK seaside town. Its closure will be felt far beyond its 800 students, some of whom will not get their degr...

Starting to think it might be worthwhile writing a "Here is an example of an RPG session" style thing for seminars but also I might just be very tired

I feel that "eyes wide shut is (literally) about Epstein" and "maybe the author just liked blue curtains", while superficially different, are actually symptoms of the same refusal to understand and engage with the practice of interpretation is but I just can't articulate why

My brain broke a little bit today in a seminar trying to link a student's point about productive vs unproductive labour in Bright Star to the politics of the pretty and I described poetry as 'onanistic', clarified with 'masturbatory', then made a point about productive vs unproductive sexuality

I'm one of those annoying people who doesn't really like poetry but likes the idea of the Romantic poets so I think it is fair to say I am exactly the correct audience for Bright Star

Honestly this is worse than anything imagined even by our most scarily prescient prophet of AI slop, Douglas Adams.

these ChatGPT book promo emails have become more frequent — this is about Is Free Speech Under Threat, I’ve also had them about Imperial Island — and godddd, this cadence, this tone, this vocabulary. why did they teach AI to write like this?!

Having Taught Peter Rabbit this week, I've been revisiting some of the behind the videos of Daisy Ridley, Margot Robbie, and Elizabeth Debicki recording their lines and I think it really shows what a particular skill voicing animation is

The amount of times I've listened to Jack O'Connell singing Rocky Road to Dublin from the Sinners soundtrack album suggests I may not have got the correct message from that film

🚨 Looking for folks to interview!

I know this is a long shot, but if you’re an archaeologist/historian who has done work in relation to the Tube, Crossrail, or Eurostar, I’d love to interview you for a nonfiction comic I’m working on right now!

I think today went well. Weirdest bit was when I said elephant instead of element in my lecture and then Mopsy lip reads elements as elephants in the film and I promise I did not do this on purpose I am just bad at words sometimes

I think the strangest part of my Peter Rabbit 2 viewing was noticing that the books used 4 hole Japanese binding and just as I was thinking that a sewn board binding would be much more appropriate Domnhall Gleeson started discussing lithography and realized people like me were the butt of the joke

I've made this comment multiple times, but the most DnD thing about the DnD movie is that a good portion of the film is an elaborate plan to open a door, where the party keeps failing forward, and also it is the wrong door

If Domhnall Gleeson getting his arse kicked by CGI rabbits isn't cinema I don't know what is

Next week is what teaching is all about - inflicting things on your students because you are an enthusiastic weirdo. Film Theory first years get Baudry because I happen to like apparatus theory and third years get Peter Rabbit (2018) on Film Aesthetics because I have gone mad with power
