My introduction to Peter Elbow was through this mindblowing conversation between him, charles bazerman, george hillocks, and sheridan blau on "50 years of research on writing: what have we learnt." What a loss! His work will continue to inspire our debates:

As a person who doesn’t love American football surrounded by people who do, I love stories that make me feel better about the sport, and this is one.

“I think it's being comfortable in your skin . . . As athletes and as men, I think it's challenging at times to be that vulnerable.”
Chris Jones crying before kickoff? Kansas City Chiefs fans say that's a good sign
During Chiefs games, defensive tackle Chris Jones is a six-foot-six, 310-pound wrecking ball. But he's become known for showing a softer side during performances of the national anthem.

The Internet Archive has to date downloaded 500 terabytes of US government websites, which it crawls at the end of every presidential term. The whole archive is fully searchable. This effort's housed by a donation-funded nonprofit, not a branch of the US government. blog.archive.org/2024/05/08/e...

I'd like to note the outrage of overediting a Nobel laureate in his area of expertise, and that a lot of writers (including me) have had horrible experiences of overediting in the legacy media: not just changing language but meaning and often values. Making your voice and views into theirs.

I really love the ability on Bluesky to have a conversation, but I’m going to have to mute threads for a bit until people get the “LET ME JUMP IN TO TELL YOUNWHY YOU’RE WRONG even tho I haven’t read the piece you posted/am taking about something completely different” habit out of their systems.

Big news from Guardian Towers this morning...

The Guardian has announced it will no longer post content on Elon Musk’s X from official accounts.

(I'm staying put - for now - as feel it's important to at least try to retain some balance there).
