This was one of Sahan Journal’s top public safety stories last year, but let’s be clear that it’s much worse today. Immigrant community members are afraid to leave their homes, go to work, send their kids to school, get medical help. None of this is about public safety. In fact, we are less safe.

“Some of our witnesses as well as victims, are immigrants, and they’re afraid to come down to the courthouse, that they might get snatched by ICE,” Moriarty said. “Even though we do not work with ICE or cooperate with them, we can’t guarantee that anybody’s going to be safe if they are helping us.”
Federal immigration actions upend local criminal cases
Victims afraid to testify. Defendants deported before a conviction. Immigration arrests are upending local criminal cases, Hennepin County officials say.

Our Conviction Integrity Unit (CIU) looks at past convictions to see whether we should support relief, but it also helps us look forward to avoid wrongful convictions.

Our policies on eyewitness identification testimony and youth interrogation were implemented with this goal in mind.
"Beyond reviewing past convictions, the unit is also focused on preventing future wrongful convictions."

This dashboard is an example of our commitment to transparency and ensuring innocent people are not in prison for crimes they did not commit.

The unit has supported relief in a small number of cases, including one that resulted in a full exoneration earlier this year.

My first podcast guest was Professor Rachel Barkow, who talked about how the criminal legal system doesn’t actually work to keep the public safe. We also talk about what does. Please check out, We Don’t Have to Choose,” where you find your podcasts.
Investing in the proven tools that we know prevent crimes yields significantly better public safety results than simply focusing long sentences.

Early intervention works.

The DFL (MN Dems) freaked out that Minneapolis might elect a Somali Muslim mayor last November. They set it up nicely for what’s happening here now.

How ICE’s Crackdown Hurts Immigrant Victims of Domestic Violence
Increased enforcement and Trump’s policy changes are causing some people to remain in abusive relationships rather than risk deportation, experts say.

I had a presser with DV advocacy groups to talk about how dangerous Laken Riley would be to victims of domestic violence. One of our reps, Angie Craig, Dem voted for it. She’s now running for our open senate seat bemoaning what ICE is doing to MN. The hypocrisy is stunning. @jesspish.bsky.social

We did some amazing work at the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office to make our community safer and more equitable. Hear about U Visas, our Youth Auto Theft Initiative, the first wage theft conviction in MN, a sexual assault conviction on a years old kit and one very courageous victim, and more!
As we close 2025 and reflect on this year, we are very proud of the work this office has accomplished.

Thank you to all of our staff and community partners, we're excited for another amazing year working together to make Hennepin County a more safe and equitable place to live!

We can learn so much from Jason Sole, who finally received his long overdue pardon earlier this month. Context matters when developing young people are charting their path. What someone may have done is not who they are. And Jason worked hard against overwhelming odds to get where he is.

Jason Sole’s full pardon marks a milestone in his journey from incarceration to national leadership in restorative justice and community-based advocacy.

This piece by Marvin Haynes and Andrew Markquart highlights the need for our new Youth Interrogation Policy at the HCAO. When Marvin, at 16, asked for his mom the police refused to get her and told him he was a man now.
Opinion | Youth interrogation gets a reset in Hennepin County
At 16 years old, Marvin Haynes was picked up by police for a curfew violation. He had no idea that it would be nearly 20 years before he would go home.

“With Hennepin County, Alexander has one job: Advise police officers on the filing of ERPO petitions.”

“The law was so new that nobody knew about it,” Alexander said.

*Rana has many other jobs such as advising/training our staff, community groups, and DV organizations.

One of the best decisions I made was to hire Rana Alexander to coordinate the ERPO response in Hennepin County. Check it out below:

“Last year, Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty hired Alexander away from Standpoint, a St. Paul-based social services group for survivors of domestic violence.”

Crime statistics are not helpful to individual victims of crime, but they are indicators to let us know what's working.

Our office has worked hard to shift the paradigm of public safety to be more fair, just, and restorative. These statistics let us know we're on the right path.

Really good acting, dancing, and a story that resonates, especially today, when our immigrant community members are under attack by our own government.

We saw “Somewhere” at the Guthrie and it was riveting. It’s about a family of immigrants in New York working hard to get by and to achieve their dreams. It’s also about their neighborhood in Manhattan which was erased to make way for the Lincoln Center.

Last week we released our new Youth Interrogation Policy. Learn about why a policy was needed.
“Even in interrogations free of abuse, teenagers are at a severe disadvantage. They prioritize short-term rewards over long-term consequences, in part because the parts of their brains governing measured decision-making are still developing”
