This surprised me, until I read the report. The headline applies to primary schools & certainly in Hull the outcomes of disadvantaged are very strong where there are high proportions (which is most schools) The reverse is true of secondary - in schools with lower numbers of FSM, they do better.
📈 Disadvantaged pupils perform better at schools with where they account for higher proportions of the cohort, researchers have said
Poorer pupils do better in more disadvantaged schools
Worst-performing areas for disadvantaged kids also likely to have more poor white youngsters

The 18 year old daughter of an immigrant from the Philippines, who lives nearby, is going to Oxford University.
Yet another example of the drive and ambition of the children of first generation immigrants.
Their contribution to the country is immense.

No child should be made to feel like a failure in school. Jamie Oliver’s personal insight into the experience of dyslexic pupils last night was heartbreaking. There’s hope though:

Disappointed that the curriculum review report doesn’t address the problem of the forgotten third, though I accept the need for evolution & not revolution.

Is it hyperbolic to call this a national crisis? I don’t think so.

This is a fascinating look at secondary school data.

How closely does the FSM rate in school match the FSM rate in the catchmenta area?

Interesting thought around SENCo training. An inspirational head I worked with not only offered 40 SEN places within his internal provision, he also ensured every member of his SLT completed what was then the SENCO Award. With the right values, inclusion is way more possible than some would have it.

Feedback from yesterday’s workshop.
We’re not there yet in my mind, but the government’s Opportunity Mission has enormous potential to accelerate the progress we’ve already seen in Hull.
I’ll be talking about this at cross-phase heads tomorrow.

Ruth dropped out of school in Y8 with autistic burnout. At today’s Preparing for Adulthood event, they shared their recovery story & what enabled them to get back on the education horse, a full 4 years later.
The adjustments were small, but the listening & coproduction, that was Big.
