Approaching the end of a busy day. Received & tagged the last shipment of books for Kiwanis’s book giveaway tomorrow—then baked cookies for the clergy recognition dinner we’re holding tomorrow night. Still have walnuts to crack & toast & 2 pies to bake tomorrow for Builders Club Pie Sale Friday.

It’s getting dark & the rest of the flock has gone up into the woods to roost for the night, but these diehards are still scratching under the snow for insects & worms.

Large flock of wild turkeys in the front yard today, clustering around the crabapples.

Actions of fed agents absolutely outrageous & out of control.
A US citizen filmed federal agents smashing his car window, as authorities begin a surge of immigration enforcement operations in North Carolina.

The Honduran-born Charlotte resident filed a police report after the officers let him go.

Cracking more black walnuts. The interior chambers of the walnut are formed in such a way that you have to break the nut into many pieces to get the nut meat (on left) out intact. Takes me about 1-3 minutes per nut, depending on what breaks.

Just finished making about 2 cups of candied black walnut meats from the walnuts I gathered this fall. My husband planted black walnuts from his mother’s house years ago & 4 trees lived, 2 are bearing nuts.

We now have about 8 inches of snow, the minimum amount needed to form a proper subnivean layer for the little animals, e.g. mice, weasels. Looks like the snow is here to stay.

Bullshit. This is not why housing is too expensive.
JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."

Going through some old photos this afternoon. This was my husband, age 3 or 4, sitting on his German grandmother’s lap when she came to the US for a visit after WW II.

She’s back this morning, still munching on the apple tree buds. Then she headed up the hills through the woods, towards the cabin. From her posture & size of dewlap I think she’s an older female.

Early evening visitor today: a white-tailed deer under the apple tree. She’s looking for old apples the bear may have missed.

Not sure what he means by a “1939-type moment.” The year before, my father-in-law fled Germany after participating in an anti-Nazi rally.

It’s a beautiful winter day in the north country. You can see the tracks of the female moose around the apple trees in the yard.

My reward: 3/4 cup of black walnut meats. I didn’t count how many nuts I shelled, but it was about 40 nuts.
November 12, 2025 at 3:31 PM
Mastered cracking the nut in such a way that I could remove the meat in one piece (not every single time). This one was a little shriveled, as were many that I cracked. Experts say soaking the nuts in water before cracking will plump out the meats.

My new black walnut cracker is working like a charm. Quite a bit of meat in that nut.

Went up to the cabin after breakfast & the moose was there. Had a hard time getting a pic of her from inside, so went quietly around the outside to snap a photo, then retreated.

Early morning visitor. She was munching on the apple branches but was scared by the town plow & ran away.

Apple trees. The reason the picture is so dark is that it’s still snowing, which it has been doing all day long. Plus it’s 3:30 p.m.
