Gotta love how Jon Karl and ABC News had this graphic ready to go *the very moment* that Hassett rolled out his Walmart anecdote.

Again, the only possible explanation is that MTG was recently visited overnight by three ghosts.
BASH: We have seen these attacks from the president at other people. It's not new. And I haven't heard you speak out about it until it was directed at you.

MARJORIE TAYLOR GREENE: I think that's fair criticism. And I would like to say, humbly, I'm sorry for taking part in the toxic politics.

I had a beloved theology professor who, when someone asked whether he thought everyone ends up in heaven, responded, "No... some people will get there and be so disturbed by who else is there that they won't want to stay."

This is an excellent post, and I hope to be able to join as a member very soon.
I published this piece as a free post. I would love to continue to offer long-form essays like this for a broad audience. However, it is solely the support of my paid members that makes this possible.

Blaming the entire Democratic Party for the actions of three individuals who weren’t, as far as we know, even Democratic voters and then telling Democrats they need to tone down *their* hateful rhetoric is a hell of a combination
Rep. Michael Rulli: "The Democratic Party... your rhetoric needs to be toned down... when Joe Biden was in office, we listened, we watched, and we spoke, but we spoke fluently and we didn't speak with this hate... you tried to kill our president twice. You actually killed Charlie. Enough is enough."

I couldn't quite nail why @anamariecox.bsky.social's comment resonated so much with me. But you did. I am not against persuading people. That's important. But many people invoking the word persuasion constantly are just status quo defenders. The term civility serves the same purpose.
I like this. The drum beat for “persuasion” and “civility” serves as a demand for self-censorship and avoidance of important but divisive issues. The implicit demand to first ~persuade~ our way to total consensus before any political change serves only the status quo and those sitting pretty in it
"My highest calling is not persuasion. I am not interested in persuading people necessarily. I am interested in good policy. I am interested in saving people's lives. I want to create arguments that create movement," says @anamariecox.bsky.social, discussing the discourse around Kirk's killing.

It’s not simply important to denounce political violence because it looks bad not to. It’s the right thing to do on the merits. Even more specifically to this moment it’s important because the forces of fascism are inherently better at political violence than the forces of civic democracy.

These problems are even bigger. As a constitutional matter, the deployment of unfederalized Guard personnel into a nonconsenting state can never happen. Never.
