Here’s little bit more info about myself. I used to work in television as a documentary producer and writer.
I got assigned to cover a marine scientific expedition of Filipino scientists to the West Philippine Sea in 2017. And then I was hooked.

This has been going on for years. I interviewed the head of the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration in 2021 and he said the number of typhoons that go through PH is normal—it’s the intensity and severity that’s increasing, and that is due to climate change.
Typhoon Kalmaegi killed at least 188 people across the Philippines and caused untold damage to infrastructure and farmland across the archipelago.

I think the worst is over, and I acknowledge the fact that we are more fortunate than our other countrymen who experienced the full devastation of the typhoon. Grateful for the Sierra Madre mountain range that shielded us from the worst of it. Hopefully we can in turn protect in from destruction.

Typhoon Fung-Wong is here. Strong winds and rain battering down on us right now. We can’t be complacent just because our area doesn’t usually get flooded. No one is safe anymore. More devastating storms due to climate change + corruption in public infrastructure= death and destruction.

Typhoon Fung-Wong is currently devastating the Philippines. Just the sheer size is enough to encompass almost the entire country end to end. It’s trough has already started affecting our locality while the eye of the storm is in the Bicol region.

Deep-sea mining starves life in the ocean’s twilight zone
Scientists have discovered that deep-sea mining plumes can strip vital nutrition from the ocean’s twilight zone, replacing natural food with nutrient-poor sediment. The resulting “junk food” effect…

Sad and terrifying.
Worried about the coming typhoon. It’s so massive, it’s about to encompass our entire country almost end to end. Some parts in the Visayas haven’t even recovered from the previous one. This happens to us all the time, and yet some people still refuse to believe climate change is real.

Scientists in Japan made a plastic that dissolves in seawater within hours and biodegrades in dirt in 10 days.
It’s made from food additives, releases nutrients like plant vitamins, and doesn’t leave behind any nasty microplastics.😎👏💙

I know ICHA 2025 just concluded recently, but it’s been two years since we were at ICHA 2023 in Japan. I shared a poster presentation of my study on the info generation and dissemination for HABs in two localities in the Philippines. So happy I was able to join my labmates for this conference.

Wow. I didn’t expect a lot of people to follow me back. I’m just a former tv producer and writer with a two-year stint in a microbial oceanography laboratory. The thing is, even though I’m no longer at the lab, I still want to continue to do scicomm, especially marine science communication.
