The mood in Minneapolis blended open defiance with unbridled compassion — the same sentiments I’ve encountered throughout Ukraine during four years of war. And as Putin learned about Ukrainians, Trump has discovered that Minnesotans will oppose the invaders and love their own with equal ferocity.

In banning a Ukrainian athlete over his "remembrance helmet," the IOC rationalized that “mourning is not expressed and perceived in the same way everywhere in the world.” Russia has killed 15,200 Ukrainian civilians during the war. But perhaps dying is not perceived in the same way at IOC HQ.

In the first angry days after a Minneapolis cop killed George Floyd, local and state politicians stayed away from the site of his murder. They knew they were unwanted. They lacked the courage to face the people. One public figure unafraid to show up--and one immediately embraced--was Jesse Jackson.

Kuz takes his boots-on-the-ground reporting to his native Mpls. and its battles with ICE.

“Unlike them, we obey traffic laws,” said Tuna, 35, a teacher by profession. He had reverted to a calm classroom tone. “I’m a noise instigator. I try to make their lives as uncomfortable as possible.”
The breadth of underground aid networks in Minneapolis — like the dogged efforts of legal observers tracking ICE — inspire MAGA conspiracies of Democratic leaders orchestrating the strategies of residents. The notion amuses Marion. “They’ll say we’re paid protesters. Nah. We’re just neighbors.”

The efforts of Minneapolis residents to protect their neighbors from the country’s own government and its policy of ethnic cleansing will continue no matter Homan’s announcement. For they know that the Trump regime’s words echo with emptiness — a dark truth understood from Minneapolis to Kyiv.

The White House’s “border czar” declared Thursday that the invasion of Minneapolis — dubbed Operation Metro Surge — would wind down over the next week. Tom Homan’s decision to withdraw his deputized Proud Boys struck me as a tacit admission that they had broken their teeth on my hometown.

“Because the reality is,” she said, “no one is coming to save us."

That refrain of self-reliance I saw in Minneapolis during the federal siege mirrored the tenacious, humble, neighborly courage I’ve witnessed across Ukraine since Russia launched its full-scale war four years ago.

Bravo. The Guardian also does this. Whereas NYT continues to use terms like "inaccurate claims" and "falsehoods," and feels very proud of itself. Just call it like it is, like journalists (like myself) are supposed to.

Bovino doesn't just go home. Kristi Noem doesn't get to ride off into the sunset with Corey Lewandowski on her horse. Stephen Miller doesn't get to order federal agencies to break the law and then move over to Fox News. Investigate, prosecute, punish. No one is above the law.
Kristi Noem is an absolute disgrace. Tell your representatives in Congress it’s time to impeach!

A US government intent on ruling by terror and pursuing a broad policy of state violence poses a daunting new reality for a country lulled by the absence of autocracy throughout most of its history. Daunting—but not unconquerable if we summon our inner Ukrainian and commit together to the struggle.
