🎵And I’m writing a novel, because it’s never been done before. 🎵
This month it’s edits all the way down for me… 💀💀
First Monday of 2026! Here's to a productive week of *whatever* you need to hit those goals. Words, research, marketing, rest...writers, what's cooking for the week ahead? Let's get it 🔥

Just finished my writing goal for the month, so … I’m done now, right?

Haven Spec Magazine is open this month to submissions by authors of historically marginalized backgrounds only!

We want to read more works by Black writers, Indigenous writers, disabled writers, gay and lesbian and trans writers, and others whose voices must be heard!

Maybe it’s telling me I need to work on some smol fiction this year? 🤔

Anyone else get a good word?

Happy New Year! 🎊

Just one day left to come up with, like, some goals for 2026 or something I guess.

Some good ones in this thread; I’d say, ‘don’t use overly complicated/fancy words or punctuation.’

Because these things serve a purpose and even if your reader doesn’t understand a big word (though they probably will), it should have an impact beyond its meaning.
what is your least favorite piece of writing advice and why? 👀

Today is for cooking lasagna and a cranberry tart (both vegan). Tomorrow is for packing them up along with all the presents and driving all the way across the state.

Who else is prepping for Christmas? 🎄

About 75 pages into the novel edits—yay!

Only about 400 more pages to go … wait what?!? 😱

Honestly, how did this thing get this long??

What’s the main thing that you (you personally, working on your own projects) focus on when editing?

I find I especially have to check my sentences to see where they can read better.

I agree with this entire thread. I am deeply disappointed by @sfwa.org 's decision, especially considering how many of its members (including me) had our work stolen for the creation of that generative AI. There is NO way anyone should be eligible for a Nebula without doing ALL the writing themself.
I'm so disappointed in @sfwa.org for this. I understand that by requiring disclosure of partial LLM-created works, as their announcement states, means SFWA's letting "nominators and the voters" make the final decision. BUT YOU'RE STILL ALLOWING SUCH WORKS ON THE NEBULA AWARDS FINAL BALLOT! 1/

Sometimes I grump at myself about how long the edit phase on my last novel took … but then again, things seem to be going faster on the current one, so I have all those previous hours of work to thank for the practice.

Them: just keep writing, you can fix any story issues in the second draft.

Me, in the second draft: 🥲

To edit the novel, or to get distracted by a story story idea and start something new?? 🫣

I read so many good books I can’t name them all! But The Traitor Baru Cormorant currently comes to mind.
2025 has been a rough year. What's one piece of art that's brought you absolute joy despite everything?

Every writer who generates a slop image for their work is a class traitor.

"I can't afford a visual artist"

So your solution is stabbing artists in the back? Stealing from them?

Furthermore, slop-generated imagery suggests slop-generated writing. That's how you're presenting yourself.

When you spend so much time inventing character names that make sense for your fantasy/SF setting, that feel convincing, and are easily pronounceable, and just end up reinventing, like, Joe and Sue.

Every novel is written one word at a time.

Too bad editing means changing so many of those words that mine is becoming the Novel of Theseus.

That's what I wrote... 'something else'. It's 350K+ words, an epic in the strictest sense, a comedy that will also make you cry, and it LITERALLY saved my life.

I'm even offering it for free (at least the 1st book).

Joke’s on you, Time, I don’t see a single human being in this picture.
I guess it's fitting that it's a reimagined, worse version of someone else's artwork

Been thinking about observations I’ve heard lately:

1. Kids want X in a tv show
2. Readers want X in a book

Me: I don’t want/never wanted any of these things… 😳

Just proves you can create for a theoretical general audience but there’ll still be individuals out there looking for something else.

Some people draft an outline as a bullet pointed list. Me, I work up a full 450 pages just so I can go back and edit them all. 🥲😅🤣

Decided to do one baked good per week in the lead up to Christmas, here’s what I have so far:

Week 1: Scones (reviews tell me they were the best I’ve ever made!)
Week 2: Probably biscotti?
Week 3: ???
Week 4: (Pre-Christmas) Cookies, obviously 😋

Week 3 suggestions welcome. Must be veganizable. 🌱
