A groundbreaking new report from the The National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine calls for the creation of a new NIH institute dedicated to women's health. The report included my testimony on vulvodynia (chronic vulvar pain)!

If you missed this thread, I recommend! Megan is (gasp!) studying the thing that inspired a huge fraction of us to enter the field (consciousness) - & while she's modest about it all, she's ++ earned her many accolades.

BUT! her path has not been linear. I admire her for sharing it. So inspiring.
when i first applied to grad school in 2006, i got in nowhere. nada. not a single interview.

in retrospect, this was a very good thing.

A new approach could help AI answer complex questions faster and more accurately.

In a prize-winning paper, Yale engineer Alex Lew shows how some guiding constraints can slow AI or distort results and offers a practical way to improve both speed and quality. #Yale

This report in Nature on the costs of competing for & administering scientific grants is shocking: "In other words, European taxpayers will have spent more on the funding process than on the funding itself, and the scientific ecosystem has been drained." www.nature.com/articles/d41... 🧪
Point of no returns: researchers are crossing a threshold in the fight for funding
With so little money to go round, the costs of competing for grants can exceed what the grants are worth. When that happens, nobody wins.

Unfolding event structure distorts subjective time
Our experience of time is often distorted in striking ways. Although prior work has shown that boundaries between events can shape temporal perception…

I worry what this means for clinical research and patient reported outcomes, which often measure things like pain on a very simple 1-10 scale, often without clear anchoring.
