To be fair, that balloon had it coming.
It always pays to read down into the story! The “War Department” scrambled its new laser technology near the southern border and shot down… a party balloon! www.cbsnews.com/news/airspac...

Age verification? I used to ride in the back seat of the car with no seatbelt because the back seat was "safe."
Age verification? I was often told by my parents to get up and change the channel on the television.
Age verification? Growing up I used a gramophone to play my mum's 78rpm jazz records. And how to indicate I was about to make a turn by sticking my arm out the driver's side window on vehicles that didn't have indicators. (It was on the driving test back then.)

Sad to learn that Greg Brown, founding guitarist of Cake, has died. He was an amazing guitarist with a unique sound who wrote Cake's biggest hit to date, "The Distance."

I'm going to listen to Motorcade of Generosity on repeat today. @thebandcake.bsky.social

We reviewed more than 100 Minnesota license plates attached to immigration enforcement vehicles in recent weeks.

We found that nearly 60% were not registered with the state of Minnesota, including the Chevy Tahoe that federal agent Jonathan Ross traveled in the day he fatally shot Renee Good.

I hope states' attorneys general block this effort in its tracks. The Constitution allocates representation based on population - it does not differentiate between citizens and non-citizens. This is a blatantly unconstitutional effort to deny states their lawful resources and representation.

I was poll-greeting during the November 2016 election when a man and woman in business attire walked up and quietly asked if I'd seen anything suspicious. They were U.S. DOJ observers. I was impressed they were out ensuring a fair vote.

Now Trump wants to "take over" voting. How far we've fallen.
Trump calls on Republicans to "take over the voting" in 15 states, presumably those run by Democrats, an escalation in his effort to assert control over American elections. @reidepstein.bsky.social @nytnickc.bsky.social www.nytimes.com/2026/02/02/u...

BlueSky also broke for me a few hours ago, demanding "age vetification," which I ignored. Did this happen to anyone else?
Bluesky was down for a few hours after I posted this morning. Wanted age verification. It's about kids accessing social media, but I think it's really to silence everyone. 🤷

For close to two decades, I've run a listserver for my community. Unfortunately, those days are numbered as the Big Email providers get increasingly paranoid of accepting email from the little guys. Their paranoia is killing email.

I may move to a web forum or chat app but email is DYING.

BREAKING: Judge Jia Cobb issues a TRO blocking DHS Sec Noem's Jan 8 memo purporting to require 7-day notices by members of Congress to perform oversight visits to immigration detention facilities.

The effect is that congressional oversight visits are allowed on request, as is required by Sec. 527.

Thom Tillis is, and always has been, a weasel.
I see a lot of folks talking positively about Thom Tillis' pushback on ICE, Noem, Miller, etc. Take it from a North Carolinian. Thom just talks a big game and when the chips are down he folds every time. He voted for all these dipwads in the cabinet. He won't do jack fucking shit.

This piece about Craig Newmark got me thinking about what the world really needs: trust and truth.

AI is the weapon of choice for crooks and dictators. Truth gets buried by AI slop. We need a way to vet what we see or we will all be lost in a hall of mirrors.

Craig Newmark's philanthropic strategy is shaped as much by what didn’t work as by what did — leading to an approach that favors scale, networks, and trusted intermediaries over scattershot giving.

You walk into this bar and show your ICE mugshot, you don't pay a dime.
Scrolling through the photos of Pam Bondi's "Minnesota rioters," it's just hero after hero. Every photo includes a cowardly DHS agent with their back to the camera.

Bondi thinks she's going to win the propaganda war with this shit, but it's never been more clear that they're losing.

With all that's going on, it's important to recognize true courage and integrity when you see it. I have huge respect for Minnesota Republican gubernatorial candidate Chris Madel for his decision to stand up to fascism.

Bravo, sir. America needs more like you.
