Nature and climate funding must now be articulated as infrastructure: as essential to food systems, public health, energy stability and geopolitical resilience. In security terms, biodiversity is not sentimental, it is strategic.

Environmental breakdown isn’t a distant possibility – it’s a threat to world stability
The message is clear: climate change should be prioritised as a security crisis, not just an environmental one

Wastewater as a solution
den. However, it is a resource and a hidden connector: from wastewater reuse to nutrient recovery, from renewable energy production to surveillance for public health and ecosystem protection. This event will explore how sustainable wastewater management and sanitation provision can deliver shared benefits for ecosystem protection, health, climate mitigation, and food system resilience. Convened by UNEP and key partners, this dialogue will demonstrate that investing in wastewater provides real solutions to global challenges: addressing water scarcity, producing renewable energy, recovering nutrients, strengthening health security, lowering climate emissions, and building resilient food systems. The event will also highlight UNEP’s convening role and invite Member States and donors to contribute to scaling solutions that protect people, economies, and the planet. Conclusion – Call to Action We call on Member States, partners, and donors to work with UNEP in unlocking the hidden value of wastewater – investing in innovation, capacity, and scalable solutions that deliver benefits across health, climate, and food security.
