Once a cornerstone of online democracy, the humble hashtag is quietly vanishing — and with it, a little piece of user power, says @etymology.substack.com.web.brid.gy.

Why platforms are killing the hashtag
Today I write in anticipatory nostalgia for the cornerstone of a more democratic internet—one which is slowly being stolen from us.

YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO.
AI advocates have warned that if every author in the class action filed a claim, it would "financially ruin" the entire industry.
Authors celebrate “historic” settlement coming soon in Anthropic class action
Advocates fear such settlements will “financially ruin” the AI industry.

Yesterday we posted about the Trump administration shutting down the LGBTQ+ youth crisis line, the “press 3” option on 988 is officially gone. The Trevor Project is stepping up to help fill the gap, and they could really use some support right now. If you’re able, please consider donating! 🏳️‍🌈 💛

It is perfectly legal to know your rights and to educate others about them, too.

EVERYONE in the United States, citizen or not, has rights. I will not allow this administration to intimidate us from helping you know about them.

Here’s our shareable guide ⬇️: (pt. 1/2)

Hey BlueSky, I do this thing where I post what I’ve read every month. So here are the book I’ve read in January. All were great and I would recommend depending on the kind of reader or mood you’re in. #recentreads #readingchallange2025 #januaryreads

For those wondering: districts don't usually announce which books they're banning, or why. Books just... disappear. We only know which books are banned when someone finds that info. Huge thanks to @flfreedomread.bsky.social volunteers for compiling this info.
Welp. There's EVERYTHING I NEVER TOLD YOU and LITTLE FIRES EVERYWHERE, marked as "remove from all libraries" as of October. 🙃
Clay updated their review database with the decisions for the nearly 50 objections filed last month.

Every single one of them was either restricted or removed.

These decisions were made without reading the books and without a public review committee.

Lol. If you ACTUALLY think about it, libraries are the backbone of nearly every (traditionally published) authors' sales. There are over 17K public libraries in the US, and 100k libraries of every kind. They *all* buy books. And sometimes buy more when the first set wear out! Libraries are AMAZING.
I once heard an author say that libraries were "government-sponsored piracy, if you really think about it" which convinced me to pay zero attention to that author going forward.

Thank you for supporting libraries.
