I talk a lot about motherhood (in academia)
I used to love going out for a run while listening to news podcasts. These last few weeks though I’ve only wanted to run indoors while watching Netflix. One reason is I don’t want to slip on the icy sidewalks. The other one is I really don’t want to listen to more news about our Southern neighbour.

How my 3 yo remembers that ride: there was a driver and he had no hair. I think he put it in the garbage.
I am def using that example in class to talk about how diverse frames produce very different understandings of a same situation.
A Lyft driver, after listening to me say something to my daughter, silently changed the radio station from CBC to Ici Radio Canada : a pro move.

Jan 2, 9.15 am: I’m finally back in my office, what a relief! I’m going to be able to get so much done today.
Jan 2, 10.12 am: it’s quiet in here… I wonder how M&M (aka my kids) are doing at daycare today… I wish I could check in on them. Maybe I’ll find the answer scrolling through social media.

At this time of year, some people hand out presents. I hand out invitations to review papers. You're welcome.

How is my pregnancy going? For several days I’ve been sending my children to their respective school and daycare with a pair of left-hand mittens of different sizes for one and a pair of right-hand mittens of different sizes for the other.
So, not great?

@ryankatzrosene.bsky.social makes an interesting argument on Bill Gates’ position shift on climate change in @theconversation.com:
as climate politics is so sensitive to framing, how should we, as scientists, frame our message?

Why Bill Gates’ climate memo is being celebrated by skeptics while frustrating scientists
Gates recently called for a ‘strategic pivot’ in climate strategy. That appears to have hit a nerve.

A question for social scientists 😉
This is insane. 🤦‍♂️

Why do tech giants like Elon Musk and Bill Gates keep on saying such dumb things about climate change?

They have access to the best possible experts, who could actually teach them something, if they would only ask and listen…

Billionaires talk about climate change and climate action. We need scientists and social scientists to understand what they say, what they mean by it and what it means for us.

My day started at 4.30 am because my kid was done sleeping. On the one day I’m allowed to “sleep in“. I’d argue this is less exciting than a trip to Manitoba, although I must say I’ve never been.
It is impossible for me to reconcile the kind of histrionics that some people exhibit about moving the clocks by one hour for Daylight Saving Time, when many of those same people routinely go on trips to other time zones.

One sign that I am becoming more Canadian by the day is how mad I am at our provincial government right now.

Yes! Also, being recognized at a smaller institution might offer students more support than being just another student at a prestigious university. Eventually that support might be more helpful than the name of the prestigious university.
When we push students to always choose the highest-ranked programs, we make it easier for those programs (or their faculty) to get away with treating students badly. Since that push sends the message that students should just be grateful to be there, no matter the cost.
There's some good advice in this thread, but I'm going to offer another take on #6 here:

The "best" (i.e. most prestigious) program you get into might not be the best fit for you, and you can still have a great career, even if you decide not to put status above everything else.

Everybody agrees we have big global problems to solve, meanwhile BigTech is selling us AI glasses to help us figure out what to wear if it’s chilly outside. Because ultimately that‘s what most tech does: marginally improve our day-to-day and distract us from what could improve it significantly.

LSD sur la transition énergétique; très intéressant de penser la transition actuelle comme une multiplication de nombreuses sources d’énergie plutôt qu’une réorientation vers des énergies “vertes”. Une transition durable ne peut exister sans sobriété.

First trimester of pregnancy is extremely hard because: you may feel physically terrible every day for weeks; the anxiety of miscarrying is all-consuming; and you feel alone, even when you’re not.
Time has never gone so slow.
Yet, because it’s so common, you’re expected to just push through.

Case in point: my 4 yo is excited to have my mum visit because he thinks she can make any dish that has butter in it and apparently I’m “still learning”.
I won’t tell him that my grandma used a lot more butter than does my mum.
I’ve been cooking like a grandma, adding more butter, cream and/or salt to everything and I must say, there’s a reason why grandmas’ cooking is so popular.
