“As long as I can get angry and irritated by what’s going on in the world but still try to put it in a form where there’s hope for the future. It’s been a bleak time, here and internationally, but if you dwell on that, you forget the beauty of the everyday.”

‘The tucker box is empty now, the heart of Kelly's country cleared
And the gangers on the southern line, like the steam trains have disappeared'

Rob Hirst, 1955-2026, the beating heart of Midnight Oil - once seen, once heard, never forgotten.

Rest in peace Rob.

Rob Hirst has had a massive impact on Australian culture. He was the engine driving one of the greatest live bands of all time. RIP, dear Rob. You are irreplaceable, one of a kind, and myself, my family, and all the rest of this great country will miss you so much.

Finally getting to see Rob pounding the kit at Hammersmith Apollo in 2017 and, again, in Manchester in 2019 was one of the greatest thrills of my musical life. A sublime musician, songwriter and - most importantly - compassionate human being. Rest In Peace, Legend.

OK, friends and followers, here's a challenge for you that I suspect will go viral just like that tweet about the dress from a few years ago. We're on Town Walls in Shrewsbury but my question is this: what colour is this classic Glasdon grit bin?

Hey fellow guitar enthusiasts! Here's a fascinating deep dive into the world of Fender Japan from the pages of Guitar World. I've had my MIJ '50s Tele for about six months now, and it is an absolutely outstanding instrument. Believe the hype! 🔥🔥🔥

Fender Japan makes some of the iconic guitar firm’s most exciting products, but we know very little about how it operates… until now

Bundesliga 2 must be Europe's most entertaining league. I've watched two pulsating games on Matchday 18, with Nurnberg v Elversberg and Bochum v Darmstadt yielding 11 goals - but it's the same every weekend 💥 All fixtures streaming live on YouTube and highly recommended! ✅

An improved display that, while by no means convincing (for we tried our best to gift ten-man Harrogate a late equaliser), delivered the 3 points we badly needed. A lively Ewan Morgan was the pick of our three January signings (who all contributed), and a great strike from TP to win it 🚀

This is recommended reading for NZ music fans - some fantastic selections (and equally memorable recollections) from the former Headless Chickens front man:

Out first new story of 2026! Whether it be for Headless Chickens, Children's Hour or This Kind of Punishment, Chris Matthews has written some very fine songs (including Flying Nun's only No. 1 'George'). Here, he picks some of his own Aotearoa NZ faves: www.audioculture.co.nz/articles/son...

The Daily Record: a superb but unheralded EP from the golden age of Flying Nun that neither fits neatly into Dunedin jangle or the darker side of the label. I could make a lazy comparison with early Pretenders but Jay Clarkson's undeniable talent is all her own 🔥🔥🔥

A dreadful game of football and an even worse performance from our beleaguered, undermanned squad, whose confidence is clearly at rock bottom. Hard to see how Michael Appleton comes back from this, but - IMHO - the responsibility for our unenviable position lies firmly with the chairman.

I enjoyed a festive treat at the Gorge Film Club in Coalbrookdale today in the form of the Holdovers. I'll admit, this one passed me by on release (although it was very successful) but that's my loss because this is a modern Christmas classic. Funny, poignant and full of pathos ✅
