I am quite late this year—although better late than never, I guess—, but I decided to do an advent calendar with ancient Egyptian objects.

What better way to start the calendar than with my favourite goddess, Taweret? 1/2

My nearly 15 year old reindeer and I would like to wish everyone celebrating a very Merry Christmas. Even if you are not celebrating, I hope that you are having wonderful holidays with lots of love, peace, happiness, health. These feel like dark times, but may you all find some light in your lives.

I found this wonderful bracelet second hand and could not resist. Apparently, it was once a tourist souvenir brought from Egypt, but I have no other information. I just love it—as does Nils, the newest addition to my hippo collection 😁

My idea of a perfect winter day: Staying at home with plenty of tea, biscuits, and a good book 😊 Of course, ancient Egypt—as a general theme, but in this particular case also as a book title by Campbell Price—always sneaks into my weekend plans as well...

Some of the props that I have found in my Cleopatra advent calendar so far… Every day, I feel like a little Amelia Peabody, trying to solve my little riddles 😂

This year, I have such a fun advent calendar: “The Treasury of Cleopatra”—it was a gift from my wonderful colleagues ☺️ Every day, I have to solve a little riddle in order to get closer to finding Cleopatra’s treasures on 24 December. It is really beautifully made 😊

Me: I am so stressed. I have SO many things to do and I do not even know where to start... 😩

Also me: Time to bake some biscuits for no reason 😊

Just kidding: Of course, there was a reason. I got new Tutankhamun biscuit cutters.

My copy has finally arrived today: “Howard Carter: from tracer to Tutankhamun” by Carl Graves. I am really looking forward to reading this book 😊 Yet, I wonder whether I will hear @cgraves88.bsky.social’s voice in my head while reading this… 😉 Many heartfelt congratulations on the publication!

A study of residues on an unprovenanced Bes-vase, possibly from the Fayum c. 2nd century BCE, identified psychotropic substances that suggest ritual use, incl. harmel, which can induce visions or childbirth/abortion, & has Bes-related names in various languages including bêsasa in Egypt today
In case you are still looking for something to read this weekend: The article "Multianalytical investigation reveals psychotropic substances in a ptolemaic Egyptian vase" by Tanasi, van Oppen de Ruiter, et al. is published in open access and can be downloaded here:

Today, I finally hanged my "corn bride" (arūset el-kamh) that I had bought in Abydos. I was really worried that it might get damaged during the transport, but luckily it has survived in one piece ☺️

I am always looking forward to receiving my copy of Egyptian Archaeology, but this time I really cannot wait to finally get my hands on the new issue: Just look at that bookmark! 😍
Is it weird to love coming home to mail from @theees.bsky.social when you actually work there?! 🤔

Congratulations to Charlotte Jordan on another brilliant issue of Egyptian Archaeology - and i LOVE the bookmark (oh, and the shameless advert 🫣).

I still cannot believe it, but here we are ☺️ I am extremely honoured that my work on ancient Egyptian beds has received the prestigious Philippika prize, endowed by the Harrassowitz Verlag. This means that my thesis is published in the Philippika series—a series that is home to many wonderful books.

You probably have noticed that the king’s kilt can be depicted with one acute angle in front, ending in an animal head—the animal is variously identified as jackal, fennec, bat. However, have you ever seen a kilt with two such angles and heads, as here in the temple of Abydos?

I love pottery 😊 So, whenever I am in Egypt, I try to get at least one new piece of these little handmade wonders. This year, I chose this lovely camel bowl. Just look at the camel’s eyes! How could I not have brought him home 🥰

I can definitely recommend Roberta Mazza's "Stolen Fragments. Black Markets, Bad Faith, and the Illicit Trade in Ancient Artefacts" as well. It truly is a great read. Of course, the things that she discusses are schocking & infuriating. Yet, it is such an important topic & we need to talk about it.
For those who haven’t seen it, Roberta Mazza’s new book about illegal manuscript trade is out and it is a really great read.
