My nearly 15 year old reindeer and I would like to wish everyone celebrating a very Merry Christmas. Even if you are not celebrating, I hope that you are having wonderful holidays with lots of love, peace, happiness, health. These feel like dark times, but may you all find some light in your lives.

I found this wonderful bracelet second hand and could not resist. Apparently, it was once a tourist souvenir brought from Egypt, but I have no other information. I just love it—as does Nils, the newest addition to my hippo collection 😁

My idea of a perfect winter day: Staying at home with plenty of tea, biscuits, and a good book 😊 Of course, ancient Egypt—as a general theme, but in this particular case also as a book title by Campbell Price—always sneaks into my weekend plans as well...

Some of the props that I have found in my Cleopatra advent calendar so far… Every day, I feel like a little Amelia Peabody, trying to solve my little riddles 😂

This year, I have such a fun advent calendar: “The Treasury of Cleopatra”—it was a gift from my wonderful colleagues ☺️ Every day, I have to solve a little riddle in order to get closer to finding Cleopatra’s treasures on 24 December. It is really beautifully made 😊

8 Dec: Since December is full of wonder, I present a mystery object today. The object is described as "Mating Hippopotami" in the museum database. Yet, the animals' scales suggest crocodiles, as mentioned in the description as well. What do you think?

But Bes also likes to celebrate, for instance the birth of the sun god and the waking up of the sleeper. This 2,15 cm high pendant shows him just doing that: celebrating and being loud with his tambour—and yes, this is a tambour, not tambourine, as it has no zills 2/2

Taweret is a so-called hippopotamus goddess: a significant part of her is constituted by a female hippo. However, she also has elements of lion, crocodile, and humans. Her "frightening" (actually, cute) appearance is meant to ward off evil and protect those in need, mainly mothers and children. 2/2

Me: I am so stressed. I have SO many things to do and I do not even know where to start... 😩

Also me: Time to bake some biscuits for no reason 😊

Just kidding: Of course, there was a reason. I got new Tutankhamun biscuit cutters.

My copy has finally arrived today: “Howard Carter: from tracer to Tutankhamun” by Carl Graves. I am really looking forward to reading this book 😊 Yet, I wonder whether I will hear @cgraves88.bsky.social’s voice in my head while reading this… 😉 Many heartfelt congratulations on the publication!

Today, I finally hanged my "corn bride" (arūset el-kamh) that I had bought in Abydos. I was really worried that it might get damaged during the transport, but luckily it has survived in one piece ☺️

You probably have noticed that the king’s kilt can be depicted with one acute angle in front, ending in an animal head—the animal is variously identified as jackal, fennec, bat. However, have you ever seen a kilt with two such angles and heads, as here in the temple of Abydos?

I have just started reading “Tourism in Egypt Through the Ages. A Historical Guide“ by Charlotte Booth which discusses travelling in and to Egypt from ancient to modern times. What is everybody else currently reading? 😊 I am always on the lookout for suggestions…

I love pottery 😊 So, whenever I am in Egypt, I try to get at least one new piece of these little handmade wonders. This year, I chose this lovely camel bowl. Just look at the camel’s eyes! How could I not have brought him home 🥰

Happy 122nd birthday to a wonderful museum, the Egyptian Museum in Tahrir Square! 🥳

Have you ever visited? 😊

I thought I could share these pictures of some graffiti, or secondary carvings, that I have spotted in the temple at Abydos, Egypt. I particularly love the canine that looks like a sausage dog 😊 Which one is your favourite?

Last week, I visited Abydos. Of course, I took a lot of pictures there. After all, the more you look, the more details you notice. Here, I share with you the lovely example of Seshat, wearing her panther skin like a dress with sleeves and writing the bee-hieroglyph for king 🥰

I just could not resist this beautiful necklace 🥰 The pendant is inspired by the musicians represented in Nakht's tomb—the painting shown here is a facsimile by N. de Garis Davies (www.metmuseum.org/art/collecti...).

People who know me know that I am nervous before each and every talk that I have to give. But for this one, "El erudito, la princesa, y el adventurero. Luxemburgo y Egipto" I am particularly nervous, since it is going to be my first lecture in Spanish. Wish me luck! 🤞

Did you know that there is a Playmobil set of Scooby Doo! in Egypt? 🤔 I only found out recently and could not resist it… for research purposes, of course.
