I know a bit about digital preservation and railway signalling
One day someone is going to have to explain to me the significance of central European 19th century dress soldiers to Christian theology.

Of course they might be a pagan symbol subsumed into the dominant Christian paradigm

God, I hate the new BOM web site. It never quite gives the information I want.

Gotta say I think this review says more about the reviewer that the show being reviewed.

Article pointing out the cost of paying to access Australian standards. And asking whether Australian specific standards are necessary. But then the kicker that shows the people making this argument know *nothing*...

LOL, when was the last time they tried to get a copy of an iso standard?

@dreadships.bsky.social possibly a bit colourful for the North Atlantic, but very effective.

Only one more, I promise... Clearly the corner of Riley & Miles St. From my battered Gregories, I reckon this has been all cleared ('slum clearance') to build the St John Northcote Place.

Imagine having all the resources of the SLNSW at your finger tips and you could only come up with that caption.

Who cares about the hat? The model is nearly blocking the view of the Chandris Line ship. I'm fairly confident she's the SS Ellinis, formerly the Matson Line's Lurline, which ran Southampton - Sydney. Her passengers were mostly migrants.

January 1967, indeed. Given the Daily Torygraph was a morning paper, I think I can be very confident that this was taken on Monday, 2 January 1967 (look at the screamer on display)

Wodonga Coal Sidings. Someone should tell the State Library of NSW that it's NSW that has the narrower gauge.

The track worker is actually striding across the broad gauge - the NSW gauge track is to the left. The NSW line is a freight only branch line at this date.

Seriously? Those blades are completely unprotected.

(And those struts look way to flimsy to take 1/4 of the lift under all conditions. Can it fly on three lifters when one fails?)

So the Metro will be brought into use on 3 Nov. But not for passenger traffic - empty cars etc. So when will future historians consider the Metro open?
October 29, 2025 at 7:10 AM
LOL there were fewer vehicles on the new Wurundjeri Way extension this morning than on our local orange road (*)

(*) Melways reference to a not quite minor road, but certainly not major

It'll pick up with the tunnel, of course, but still...

Media reporting lots of SES calls in Werribee thru Wyndham yesterday.

The Emergency Services map is interesting and shows a clear track.

Was it a small tornado formed out of a thunderstorm cell?

An interesting back formation.

As far as we can tell PCR was 'Public Carriage Road', which came from UK legislation authorising enclosure of common land (i.e. a road usable by carriages that could be traversed by the general public). The use in subdividing Crown land is obvious.

Seniors week in Victoria, and this weekend Seniors can catch any public transport for free. It's especially great value if you love trying bus replacements.

All of the Burnley group is out. And important bits of the East Pakenham line. And Sunshine - Ballarat.

The Cheltenham train left first, nearly empty, because all the Dandenong line passengers were in the Frankston train. Presumably they were following the instructions "Catch any Frankston line train".

Perhaps Metro should have been a bit clearer?

In an era when shitty news articles rule, this is a delight to read (particularly if you are Australian).

I loved the last paragraph...

She created an Australian icon. Then Bluey brought it to the world
You won’t know her name, but Agnes Lee is probably responsible for some of the best and worst moments in your family’s life.
