I know a bit about digital preservation and railway signalling
Helped two confused groups of people today find their way with trains through the city.

Two elderly ladies wanted to go to Altona, got off at Caulfield, and were told to catch an Up Frankston. And change at Flinders St. (I quailed at explaining which trains they should catch going home.)

Monash has a small computer museum at Caulfield. Here’s the control panel of the classic IBM360. Very swish, but you were paying top dollar. Our CS dept could only afford the knockoff clone the Interdata 7/32

Bring back the Koala sand train.

What a pity they line closed as there was then only the glass sand traffic. Most of the track is still (technically) there. I suspect most of the sand would be off to concrete batching plants, so it could be carted in bulk.

Announcement this morning recommending that Newport bound passengers change at Flinders St from the Frankston line.

This is TERRIBLE advice - it'd add at 8 minutes to journeys, and potentially much more.

In the morning, change at Southern Cross.

In the afternoon, change at Flinders Street.

First day of actually commuting by the Metro - reduced my commute by about 20 minutes - fewer stops, shorter wait when changing trains, and a shorter walk at the end.

Interesting. The mens toilet on Platform 4 at Caulfield has turned into a unisex accessible/baby change toilet (there is still a mens only toilet on platform 3 for bashful men)

This headline says all you need to know about why Australia has a housing affordability crisis. A lot of us don't want cheaper housing...

Interesting new signs at the Degraves St barriers Flinders St.

Of course this Myki feature has always existed, but I bet few know of it and its interesting to see it promoted.

Is surprisingly underwhelming

Is this the last bit of the Metro to open?

Town Hall station is officially declared as a rabbit warren.

(You need 5 right angle turns to get to Swanston St from the barriers. 8 from a train)

Saw a perplexed couple at the local station. They were trying to work out if a Newport train would take them to Southern Cross. They couldn't find Newport on the route diagram - which had been changed for the service from Sunday.

I was able to reassure them that it would go to Southern Cross...

A few... how much of the $35 million marketing budget will be spent on tickets, do you think? You wouldn't have to spend more than about $10 million of that to get a very successful documentary.

The journalist/lawyer answering this question characterised the behaviour as 'greenwashing', completely misunderstanding the problem with the ad.

A perfect example of the problem. If media, legal eagles, & politicos don't have real world knowledge, the system doesn't work.

Look around you.

Having trained Victorians during January that you don't need to touch on/off on weekends, or pay, there might be a bit of confusion tomorrow on the public holiday...

If this thread hasn’t already found its way onto your timeline, do take the time to have a read.
A few days ago, I stood in the graveyard of an 1100 year old church, getting damper and damper in the drizzling rain.

A woman walked into the graveyard, waved, said hello, and, as we had previously arranged, handed me a paper bag full of human bones.

The life of a churchwarden is a strange one...

S found this in an opshop. The last edition from 2013 - killed by satnav. I didn’t even know there was a 9th edition; I still have & use a 7th in the car for rural trips when needed
