4e has the exoteric mechanics fill up the entirety of its esoteric mechanics and so its fiction starts to feel mechanical and rigid and (lack of better term) video gamey. i think the fiction generated by d&d synchronically across its multi-year culture was shattered by it and hence
4e annoys because it doesn't pretend that it's fighting-adventure rules are anything else and expects you to use rules as written. By not lying about itself, it fucks up the normal D&D process of pretending that it's good for other things, which pretence is *self-fulfilling* via quiet rulings.

yknow to me ttrpgs are some of the only game experiences that can arise purely from vibes. like a game manual can have hella simple mechanics but an absolutely penetrating vibe and people can run with that. the writing IS the mechanics

Coolest trpg I’ve read since You Will Die in This Place. Authorial voice with attitude carries the setting and themes.
Even in the cultivation genre, the setting is unique. Mechanics look great, but I’d need to play. It's not like other games I've played. Maybe a bit of 4e with osr sensibilities

gearing up to run the second session of a twoshot for this and did some typo fixings and mechanic clarifications. two things i'd forgotten to add in for public release were more XP triggers and the Death mechanic, a fusion of Soulsborne and communism

replaying bloodborne after elden ring really shows the difference between miyazaki directed combat and junya ishizaki's combat direction. even lady maria who is one of the most difficult fights (to me) feels fair and with 40vig doesn't 3 shot you. meanwhile that's just not the case in elden ring

this game is mostly mechanically simple (a player even said it's rules-lite, which im kinda proud of as i've never made a rules-lite game before) because the vast majority of its deeper mechanics have to deal directly with the fiction (or in this game, the World)
