The blatant illegality and the incoherence around what’s next should be the focus of the coverage. Anything else is credulous, enabling stenography.
Trump must be very happy with the elite media coverage, which has by and large been breathless. For shame.

tl;dr doesn't point out very well that it's pretty hard to save up enough in an HSA to pay even one ER bill. Or for a course of cancer treatment. How about for a medevac?

"Interesting" is one word. "Irresponsible" might be another, especially since the consensus of many legal scholars is that this move shattered both US and international law. It's not as if the reporters were briefed alongside members of Congress, which might have happened in a legal action.
Interesting
(Semafor) - The New York Times and Washington Post learned of a secret US raid on Venezuela soon before it was scheduled to begin Friday night — but held off publishing what they knew to avoid endangering US troops ..

Trump and his cronies can try to dress this up, but it is an illegal act of war to replace Maduro and grab Venezuela's oil for his billionaire buddies.

I have 3 axioms that help me decide when to talk to people I disagree with:

1. To debate a subject is to concede that the subject is debatable.

2. To reason with a person is to concede that the person is reasonable.

3. To ask for evidence of a claim is to concede that the claim might be true.

When you go to write a book, the first thing an agent or publisher will ask you is what other books it is like. That's because they want to slot it into a "genre." This book is not like any other books, and that is a good thing.
I can write books but I'm not good at summarising them once I have written them so when people ask "What is Everything Will Swallow You about?" I struggle to come up with a succinct answer. I think in future, when people ask, I'm just going to send them this instead.
While I am still quite keen on "too modern and hippie for my taste", "I didn't buy this book to read about a cat who uses profanities" and "not at all humerus", I think this might be my new favourite review I've ever had for one of my books.

I was surprised by @npr.org 's uncritical repetition of the CDC's new line about flu vaccines being a "personal choice" and "consulting" with healthcare providers about "risks" and benefits of flu vaccines. Where's the context about how weird it is for CDC to say this?
“Flu vaccines only offer protection if people get them and in the U.S., only 42% of adults have gotten a flu shot this year. That leaves many people unprotected in face of a likely bad flu season, says Daskalakis. He'd like to see the CDC do more to encourage vaccination.”
Flu cases are surging and rates will likely get worse, new CDC data shows
Flu season is off to a rough start this year, according to new CDC data. The virus is spreading faster than in previous years and the surge is likely to get worse. Here's what you need to know.

Did you ever smoke? Lung cancer almost never has symptoms until it's already spread. Most people who might have lung cancer haven't been screened.
In 2024, only 19% of individuals in the US eligible for annual lung cancer screening underwent screening, preventing an estimated 15 000 deaths.

Full uptake could prevent 3 times as many deaths. #LungCancer

Trump just vetoed a bill that would fund the completion of a project to bring clean drinking water to rural Colorado.

The bill was passed unanimously by the House and the Senate.

He did so in retaliation for the state refusing to release Tina Peters, who illegally tampered with voting machines.

Good reporters go above and beyond to seek comment from those they are reporting about. Government officials from both parties try to stymie reporters by ghosting, but it doesn't work and it's not a crime for a reporter to simply try harder to be fair.
“You are not entitled to a response from us, or anyone, ever,” is what a US Education Department spokesperson wrote to one of our reporters, @megomatz.bsky.social, after she repeatedly tried to get comment from the department and its officials. My column on the condemnation of good journalism.
Our Reporters Reached Out for Comment. They Were Accused of Stalking and Intimidation.
Our journalists reach out to people they’re writing about to ensure fairness. But in this environment, they’ve found their efforts to do so are more likely to be vilified than appreciated.
