Vespa tropica (haematodes)

My impression of this wasp is its brutish life cycle of robbing and destroying paper wasp nests, the black mandibles sell the bandit look even more. Nonetheless, a gorgeous, decently big wasp, to find a dead one is a treat.

I usually carry a Lego figure as a handy scale reference when I'm out photographing insects, and I often can't resist inserting it just for fun. Mating pair of ambush bugs on a goldenrod, the female is eating a bee (Indiana Dunes National Park). #insects
