It's getting cold out there! Stay safe, everyone! (and as an archaeologist, I could point out: Tauntaun plus a good obsidian flake would also be effective, lol!)
Winter Clothing Rules

Rule 1: COTTON KILLS
Layers, layers, layers
Synthetic, synthetic, synthetic
Have extras!
Extra clothing (in plastic bags)

(Wool also works... but is expensive, none of the kids or adults we were teaching this ever had wool. Except socks, of course).

Day Three of our advent calendar and today's 'window' is rather special if we do say so ourselves.

Yes we are going medieval.

Seems fitting for a medieval guild hall we hear you say...

Are you familiar with the fiercest Ice Age Angeleno? Beyond their size, evidence from #TarPits research suggests American lions lived up to the name 𝘗𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘢 𝘢𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘹, which translates to "cruel or frightful panther": go.nhm.org/biggest-cat

Oh, no, Claude! :(
It's with heavy hearts that we share that Claude, our beloved albino alligator, has passed away at the age of 30. Claude brought joy to millions of people at the Academy and across the world during his 17 year tenure. We will miss him dearly. 🤍

When in LA- HIGHLY recommend a visit here- fascinating, and a chance to see archaeology and conservation in action (wear replaceable shoes, lol. If you know, you know!)
🦴 Ever wonder how fossils are uncovered from the #TarPits?

Scientists carefully excavate Ice Age remains—bone by bone—from bubbling asphalt seeps right in the heart of L.A.

Wow- I want to go there so bad! These little details of life...
Reading about the past or watching documentaries are a great way to discover the past, but there's noting that compares to seeing the actual bowl a cook wrote his name on 19 years before Shakespeare was born...

🐺 Wolves in dog's clothing 🐺

Our latest in @pnas.org uncovers a surprise three to five thousand years ago: 2 canids in human contexts on a tiny island in the middle of the Baltic Sea, that ate marine food—but had 100% gray wolf ancestry.

Where they tame wolves, or even an incipient domestication?

If not, you should, he's awesome!

'Hatch', a terrier/whippet cross, was found outside the carpenter's cabin, and was the ship's ratter. He was also a good boy. Yes, he was.

Look at those beautiful paw pads!
Spotted at the vet hospital this week—Harley the hyena! 🦷💚

Harley came in for her checkup (and some dental pampering). Our keepers noticed she was having a little trouble chewing, but four root canals later and Harley’s on the road to feeling much better!

Roman bronze dragon’s head standard, AD 190-260.

Originally mounted on a pole, with a long fabric tube attached to the back of the head. When charging on horseback, the wind inflated the tube and the dragon shrieked!
