"The remake doesn't replace the original" would ring truer if the legal way to play the original wasn't to spend 120+ bucks on a 25 year old used copy (to say nothing of having a modded or imported old console).

There seems to be a push towards smoother&smoother experiences, people going on about how this or that game "doesn't respect their time." But the older I get, the more I want games that are willing to show me what they want to be, friction & all, rather than be eager to please every step of the way.
Today on Astral City Mini—inspired by Dragon Quest VII Reimagined's newly published critique—I muse on automation and friction in modern game design. For my money, I'd like an adventure to feel like an adventure.

Dragon Quest VII Reimagined's review embargo weighed anchor this morning, letting loose a tide of critique. The overall consensus seems to be that Dragon Quest VII's second reinvention leans heavily into a modern design ethos, sanding off the game's edges in the name of "accessibility": more guideposting, fewer puzzles, easier combat. To me, it all sounds like something of a shame.

I'm in Lufia(1)'s endgame now and oof. Sometimes the paths to these last few dungeons are long enough that I'm already exhausted by the time I get to the actual dungeon. But I want to see this predecessor to my childhood love through; there's so much about it that's really charming.

I'm in the middle of various second chapters in Octopath (the first one) and if *this* is the game in the series people tell you to skip, I'm going to fall head over heels for the second one.

I just replayed the game last year, but this is good to keep in mind if I ever play it again - finally a retranslation that doesn't seem to be overly literal!

Today, in "good problems to have, I guess": both the jp & the en actors for Octopath (still the first one for me) have such nice voices and I just can't choose. For some I might have a slight preference for jp, but the battle barks are also so good in this game that I want to understand all of them.
