Here’s my article, now online!

After getting a chance to see the superb End of the World and Hard-Boiled Wonderland, I discussed how it and a spate of Japanese theater/musicals are making the jump internationally as Japanese storytelling across the board grows on the global stage

To note: Japan still suffers from the UK ‘bad electoral system’ issue, but that hardly matters when you have the seats

Interesting to note the drop for Reiwa and the fact Team Mirai came from nowhere to almost equal the headline-stealing Sanseito, but LDP getting 2/3 on 37% also, UK Labour-style

This far surpasses even optimistic pre-election predictions and is entirely the implosion of the opposition

Quote from JP TV circulating sums everything up very well, from an LDP source

'I don't really know why we won so massively. The Centrist Reform Alliance were just so weak'

Which yea, merging a center-left with a religious party that fundamentally oppose and giving no policies does that, typically

If you want to know why sometimes Japanese politics feels like a backhanded story, one of the more 'progressive' parties actually making gains as a smaller-party insurgent is Team Mirai, who want to offer structural reform

But they're worse on immigration and think AI will solve all our problems

Another thing I hadn't even considered from all this but I just saw brought up, I wonder if reaching the supermajority status (the percentage needed for constitutional revision) will see them revive the mid-2010s debates over changes regarding public protest, military status and the like

I feared this based on the last week, but LDP are going to get possibly a supermajority from the election, giving an unproven Takaichi the reigns when she's barely set out policies (and what she has are economically and socially volatile) and there's bubbling new scandals
Japan, NHK:

Seat projection national parliament

LDP (Conservative): 274-350 (+121)
CRA (Centre): 37-91 (-108)
Ishin (Libertarian): 28-38 (-5)
DPP (Centre-right): 18-35 (-1.5)
Sansei (Right): 9-16 (+9.5)
Mirai (Centre): 8-12 (+10)
...

+/- vs. Last election result

Legit tho, Meiji Jingu almost doesn’t feel like Tokyo in this

It’s my first time seeing it like this!

Came into central Tokyo for a photo run in the snow, immediately rewarded by meeting this dapper chap

Tamagotchiiiiiiii

(It’s cool and I wrote about that but also the specifics of this revival)
Bandai is pulling out all the stops for the 30th anniversary of the Tamagotchi this year, and along with it has been a recent revival in mainstream interest for the toy and brand. Hardcore fans however, would argue that the brand never went away.
It's more than nostalgia fueling a Tamagotchi revival | scrmbl
Tamagotchi were an instant phenomenon when they first hit Japanese ...

If you pick up a copy of the Japan Times this weekend, keep an eye out for my article on the global expansion of Japanese theater and musicals!

“Is that-“

“A miniature version of the box for junk items in Hard Off? Yes it is!”

“Did you buy it?”

“…what do YOU think?”

PARCO Game Museum is actually running for a month, longer than everything else, but it’s also awesome, filled with retro tech, arcade machines, indie artist pop-ups, demo kiosks, an iam8bit vinyl selection, and even a Hard Off!

Romeo is a PARCO Man is a Grasshopper-fueled part of the event, with boss rushes, mini concerts, talks and demos of the game on offer that’s super cool on the roof of PARCO

Also Pingu (they have a Pingu Switch 2 case that’s impossibly tempting)
February 7, 2026 at 6:52 AM
I’m checking out Shibuya Games Week, the first such event from PARCO Games turning Shibuya into a city-wide showcase of indie games with demos, pop-ups, talks and collab food-drinks through the city and of course in PARCO itself
