I think of my time at UC Santa Cruz, and how the university made education open and available. It seems like a vanished golden age.
Students from nine UC campuses plan to rally this week against a regents vote on tuition hikes, arguing possible increases make education more inaccessible. UC officials say changes will shield against inflation & make costs more predictable over time:

I was disappointed in Guillermo del Toro's "Frankenstein." The dialogue toward the end was obvious and banal, the father-son redemption unearned, the optimistic dawn at the end inexplicable. #frankenstein

A testimony from Chicago.
Kyle Kingsbury is not a journalist. He is not an op-ed writer.

He is a computer safety researcher.

And he has written one of the most compelling, comprehensive accounts of the ongoing hell in Chicago that you could possibly imagine.

In under 1600 words.

I'm teaching Tom Jones now, and just delighted that the students are all atwitter about finding out who Tom's real father is. They could look it up on Wikipedia, but they are reading the book instead to discover it as Fielding intended. #booksky
