Woot Woot! A very plot-relevant word today 😆! I was surprised I only used it about a dozen times in HermitageWIP! I would have expected more in a story about converting an old house into an academy!

Here Dr. Eiflman is lamenting to his butler (our MMC) about his troubles in chapter 2.
“She thinks it’s too soon?” “Yes. She doesn’t want to be the first one. It’s a conundrum. We can’t attract students without teachers and we can’t attract teachers without students. I just wish I could do something to build confidence in the Hermitage as an academy. I thought hosting a broad-based conference would be an easy way in, but I’m not getting a single nibble on the bait.” If the Hermitage flopped, what would Dr. Eiflman do? Likely sell it to the highest bidder and go home to Excalibur, leaving Bayle unemployed for the third time in a year. He’d had enough of bouncing around the galaxies after assignments that didn’t pan out and, at twenty six, he was anxious to put down roots. The Hermitage was the best position he’d ever held. He’d been surprised he’d even managed to get in the door, given his lack of experience. He’d only fudged his resume a little

“Divert full power to the vertical fans!” Bergman barks. “Get us above the storm.” “Yes, Captain.” There is a flash, followed by an earsplitting boom. Dr. Radcliffe and I stumble as the airship quakes so violently it feels like it will split apart. Bergman falls against the helm, and Titus tumbles from her shoulders with a yowl. The floor falls away, and I’m airborne with Radcliffe’s golem alongside me. The twinkling dragon, of course, is physically undisturbed by the calamity. Titus and several crew members not strapped into their chairs go flying. Even the crew properly strapped down are flung against their consuls.

A better hold on the dragon would be around the upper chest and lower neck, constricting the airway and, more importantly, compressing the organ that produces combustible vapors. Still, the maneuver has the desired effect, the dragon pulling away in a riot of buffeting wings. I cinch my body tighter, knowing draconic bones will break before mine.

Lightning flares, arcing between clouds and reflecting off Dr. Frederick Radcliffe’s golden scales. Next to Dr. Radcliffe’s dragon form, Mauve appears like a dragonet despite being fully grown. Where the copper dragon is long and lithe, he is longer and massive. His wingspan matches, maybe even surpasses, a jumbo jet’s. Being only half a skaag, I’m scrawny compared to Radcliffe and smaller than Mauve. But as the sparring sessions with the smaller dragon have proven not so diminutive, I can’t put up a good fight.

Chapter 4 Glimmers The sun poked through the clouds often enough to shimmer off the drying puddles on the pavement and make the sodden grass sparkle all across the quad. One wilted flower had shriveled and browned beside its still brilliant gold and burgundy companions. It was over this single spent bloom that Helena crouched, holding the old-fashioned camera as close to it as she could and adjusting the manual focus. Here was evidence, on this otherwise perfectly tidy campus, that death could find you anywhere. She wanted to capture it before some well-meaning gardener snatched it away to hide the imperfections of the world from the students of the idyllic New England college. No impulse could be more boring, as far as she was concerned. Helena was desperately uninspired by the straight lines of the perfect houses nearby and the spotless curbs and sidewalks. Where were the messy yards and decaying garages? It almost made her miss home, the rusted fences and overgrown lots. Where were the wild, uninvited things? The weeds that sprouted up through the cracks in spite of everyone’s efforts to suppress them? “What are you up to?”

I grind my teeth. I’m such an idiot. A phase disruptor is a magically powered laser cannon with the unfortunate effect of immobilizing dragons while they ride the slipstream. The gunman doesn’t need to see Radcliffe’s draconic form to use the weapon. All the gunman has to do is point and shoot at the dragon’s humanoid golem. Think. God. The smell is so awful I can barely manage a single coherent thought.

Bullets plop into the blob with seemingly no effect. A stringy pink tentacle shoots from the mammoth pustule, wrapping around the head of a hapless magician. The man is lifted from the ground and pitched off the hillside. The other magicians fall back to avoid other questing tentacles that shoot from the blob. “That’s not…” Joe gapes at the bizarro battle. “I think it is,” I say. “We’ve found the skaag.”
