Big data systems are like a cryptocurrency tumbler for bias. They make it so that you can no longer connect the inputs to the outputs in such a way that you can no longer identify and trace the relational chain of biases that are imbued in a recorded observation by virtue of it being an observation.

Data just is not a free-floating neutral object that exists apart from the networks of social relationships, historical happenstance, accreted social construction, and human positionality that go into conceiving of something as being recordable as an observation. Data is the essential unit of bias.

I always feel roguish to make such a basic point, but bias is an intrinsic feature of _data_, and transitively of any system of analysis or decision-making based on data.
