Post-TB lung disease - the impact of TB on patients does not end with the course of antibiotics, characterised by substantial long-term pulmonary impairment.

Post-tuberculosis lung disease: a case definition for use in research studies
Despite growing awareness of the substantial burden of long-term pulmonary impairment among tuberculosis survivors, marked variability in how post-tuberculosis lung disease is defined across research ...

Great study in @jexpmed.bsky.social.
IFNAR1 or IFNAR2 complete deficiency leads to severe viral disease. Here, authors identify 11 mutations where heterozygosity predisposes to severe viral disease by negative dominance. 1 is common. Paper: rupress.org/jem/article/...
A common form of dominant human IFNAR1 deficiency impairs IFN-α and -ω but not IFN-β-dependent immunity | Journal of Experimental Medicine | Rockefeller University Press
This study identifies 11 IFNAR1 alleles impairing IFN-α/ω responses but sparing IFN-β, including an allele common in Southern China (P335del). Heterozygous

The dynamics of interferon-stimulated gene expression in COVID-19 depends on their underlying epigenetics in specific cell types, with impacts on their utility as blood RNA biomarkers. Great to contribute to this study bringing insights into diagnostics from immune cell epigenetics

SARS-CoV-2 human challenge reveals biomarkers that discriminate early and late phases of respiratory viral infections - Nature Communications
It’s not always clear whether blood biomarkers are differentially expressed in the time course of viral infections. In this SARS-CoV-2 human challenge study, the authors identify distinct single-gene ...

This is a great thread on #UnionConf2024, and useful for anyone who like me was not able to attend.

Thank you for putting together. #TBSky #IDSky
#UnionConf2024 has wrapped up, and what a conference! Some fascinating talks and great discussions. Seems to me that there are more questions than answers right now in #TBSky but its an exciting time..

Some personal highlights (in no particular order):

Impressive.

Key take homes for me.
1) Time to result still long - addressable but a barrier currently.
2) 10% contamination.
3) Despite using cutting edge tests a "causative" organism found in only 15%.
