Vacancies in forecast offices elevate risks to the safety of local communities (which should be the top priority)… But from a nuclear perspective they also reveal major blind spots in regions hosting U.S. ICBM silo fields that are prone to flooding, making this a national security concern too.

Trump just attacked Iran. A few immediate reactions.

First off, as a U.S citizen, I'm simply appalled by Trump's refusal to seek Congressional authorization in violation of law and the constitution. Just because it's not surprising doesn't make it any less dreadful. (1/n)
APNewsAlert: WASHINGTON (AP) — US attacked three Iranian nuclear sites, Trump says, joining Israeli air campaign as Tehran promises to retaliate.

Last fall @danzhukov.bsky.social and I heard a lot of interest from Bay Area AI folks in small modular (nuclear) reactors for powering large-scale data processing. W/ US nuclear regs in flux, SMR advocates should also push for robust safeguard & security protocol nationalinterest.org/blog/energy-...
Proceed with Caution: The Price of Neglecting Safety for SMRs
Small modular reactors may be the path to green energy, but there is a price to be paid for neglecting the safety of SMRs.

Excellent resource from UCS to help anyone interested in submitting a comment in response to the Environmental Impact Statement released by the NNSA on plans to resume nuclear pit production at Los Alamos
UCS has a toolkit that you can use if you want to submit a public comment:

Also in alignment with a push from big tech in Silicon Valley to lower regulatory barriers for SMRs…
Big focus on shoring up US SMR producers against competition from Russia and China. Obviously, limited NNSA purview here, but some evidence of his priors. (He’s a total unknown to me otherwise.)

Very well argued position by @lrand11.bsky.social why it's important to cover the AI basic (in terms of defintion, threat perception and actual technical realities etc) before jumping on the "AI arms race" hype train. Really worth a read!

The Risk of Bringing AI Discussions Into High-Level Nuclear Dialogues
Overly generalized discussions on the emerging technology may be unproductive or even undermine consensus to reduce nuclear risks at a time when such consensus is desperately needed.

Nice coverage of House of Rep. nuclear threat disc.

Garamendi on the opportunity cost of Sentinel:

“For the same $200 billion, we could fully fund the National Institutes of Health’s annual budget for 10 years, or provide universal pre-K education for every child in the U.S. for nearly 30 years.”
Rep. Jim McGovern has organized a vitally important session in the US House of Representatives to bring attention to nuclear weapons & the threat of nuclear war. Over the next hour, as many as 9 members will provide invaluable perspectives on the nuclear challenge. Watch here: live.house.gov
