Mark MacLachlan Mark MacLachlan is a professor of chemistry and the dean of science at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. For his research he creates new iridescent materials that mimic the structures of beetle shells - and can be used for sensing and coloration. He's been a crossword fan since his days as a postdoctoral student at M.I.T. This is his fifth construction for The Times. - W.S.

It explains that solar wind particles follow Earth’s magnetic field to the poles, where they excite atmospheric atoms that emit light as they relax. Red light occurs above 150 miles from oxygen. Green light appears between 60 and 150 miles from oxygen. Blue and purple occur below 60 miles from nitrogen. Yellow and pink are color mixes. A map shows auroral zones expanding during solar storms.

📢 One less molecular mystery - the crystal structure of diacetylene is solved, published in @iucrj.iucr.org today! Fantastic work by Larissa, and also I think will be the first structure deposit in @ccdc.cam.ac.uk from wombat! Read the OA paper here journals.iucr.org/m/issues/202...

New paper out, High-pressure crystallisation of Isobutyronitrile pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/..., nice results from the UWA and Synchrotron team that show this small molecule crystallises into the same structure as at low temperatures. There's some lovely calculations that explain why this may be.

Building on the launch of our Crystal Growth section in 2021, we continue to advance research in this key area.

Acta Cryst. Section B: Structural Science, Crystal Engineering and Materials is pleased to announce the commissioning of a Special Issue dedicated to Crystal Growth and Related Characterization. This follows the introduction of the journal’s Crystal Growth section in 2021 and reflects our continued commitment to advancing research in this area. We invite researchers to contribute original work on all aspects of crystal growth involving non-biological small molecules and extended organic, inorganic or hybrid materials. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: • Crystal growth mechanisms • Melting, sublimation, and dissolution behavior • Control of morphology, size, and polymorphism • Intermolecular interactions and the assembly of extended structures • Structural characterization via diffraction or atomic-scale imaging • Growth techniques accompanied by a clear crystallographic or structural analysis Submission deadline: 15 December 2025 All manuscripts will undergo standard peer review.
