Communication and Reporting Officer for a small nonprofit you've never heard of. M. Div from a seminary you regrettably might have. Husband to a poet. Father to an adorable toddler. Bookish, but not as much as I would like to be. Jesus follower.
What is a habit that you try really hard to have but have never really established even for a few days?

Mine is trying to read in the dead language I got proficient at in seminary.

There is a really interesting book on this exact topic. The End Of Evangelicalism? By David Fitch.

He's a Christian at Wheaton who engages a ton of material from Slavoj Zizek of all people to argue that American evangelicalism uses the Bible, among other things, as an empty signifier to
The American Christian is a strange beast. They follow nothing of the bible, but criticize those who don't follow it to a T. It's simply a coping mechanism, and as an atheist, I think I'll have a better chance of making heaven (should it exist) than 99.9% of those so called 'Christians'.

This is a really excellent brief meditation upon the life of Jefferson Davis. I was nervous about it at first because of the role the Confederacy plays in the imagination of a host of Christian nationalists, but my fears were unfounded.

The post I quoted is a payoff that keeps me awake at night.
One of the great problems Religion has is that commitment and devotion can grow while the spirit shrivels. Those that are the most devout can be so for the most selfish reasons.

There are many within the church who are lost and refuse to acknowledge that fact

Among people following Jesus for less than fifteen years, I have personally observed little-to-no correlation between the holiness of their lives and the kindness of their disposition. Among people following Jesus for more than thirty, the correlation seems nearly absolute.

@merkelsey.bsky.social I want to thank you. I spent forever trying to find the right search terms to come across meaningful Bible content on here. It took stumbling upon you and your follows to get them. Everyone loves a maven.

So, I'm a nobody but had followers within minutes of joining. I'd be very surprised if they were all human. Are bots just the pigeons of the social internet now?
