The beauty of Rome is that it’s a modern city on top of a fascist city built on top of a romantic nationalist Italian city built on top of a Papal city built on top of a Roman city and no matter where you are, none of these layers is ever far away

Just discovered this fascinating report from 1949 warning of the dangers of Pan-Slavist subversion in the US (publishing by House Committee on Un-American Activities).

“51 percent of the workers in the coal and steel industries are of Slavic extraction…”

Heading to the Eternal City for the third time in as many years in a couple weeks.

If anyone has any good tips or recommendations for slightly less well-known things to do or see and places to eat or drink in Rome, I’m all ears!

Quite a fascinating passage from here interpreting Britain’s WWII mythos (Dunkirk, the Blitz) an expression of traditional Protestant providentialism. Implies it was not so much WWII itself that united postwar Britain but a particularly Protestant interpretation of its significance!
