Just discovered this fascinating report from 1949 warning of the dangers of Pan-Slavist subversion in the US (publishing by House Committee on Un-American Activities).

“51 percent of the workers in the coal and steel industries are of Slavic extraction…”

Heading to the Eternal City for the third time in as many years in a couple weeks.

If anyone has any good tips or recommendations for slightly less well-known things to do or see and places to eat or drink in Rome, I’m all ears!

Was Poland a part of Central Europe? Were Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia doomed? Could a certain friend of the show have saved his family's Danubian realm from collapse?

Dominic Sandbrook and I tackled the great questions of Central European history on the latest ep. of @theresthistory.bsky.social!

Especially humbled by this review because Beneš - besides being an authority on Central European history in general - wrote one of the books I enjoyed most while researching my own, exploring the complex interplay of nationalism and socialism in pre-WWI Austria. Highly recommend!

“In his provocative and enjoyable new book, Luka Ivan Jukic argues that Central Europe should be understood less as a specific place than as a specific time, one that was irreversibly lost in the cataclysms of the 20th century…

“If you want to understand how and why Germany, Austria, Poland, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Slovenia and Croatia acquired their current forms and locations, this is a good place to start.”
