This is an incredible marathon of posting on Bluesky from a City of Vancouver Councillor. He’s documenting an unofficial filibuster at City Hall as over 600 people have signed up to speak at the budget hearing. Over 200 have said their piece so far. Follow along.

218: owns a home, born in saint Paul’s. Grumbles when he gets tax bill but then realizes it’s what makes our beautiful city. Most concerned with cuts to sustainability department. Son asked once, will we drown when sea level rises. So I’ve dedicated life to climate solutions. Reconsider thus.

Local politics is where change happens. Hundreds of people are speaking up today about the Vancouver budget. This city councillor is acknowledging every single speaker by providing a summary.

My heart is warmed by all this engagement.
Budget hearing continued after short recess. 157: environmental lawyer (?)Reads poem. 158: raised in east van. This is austerity and hasn’t been asked for. I’ve been lucky enough to use public services. Breaks my heart to think they won’t get same quality. Few people asked for this police budget.

Feeling inspired by and grateful to my fellow Vancouver residents today for organizing en masse against a budget so sloppy and craven that anyone else would be fired for presenting it at their work.
NEW: The marathon session of Council has resumed after a break for dinner. Speaker #107 of 630+ now up.

ICYMI, Councillor Orr is providing regular updates on speakers.

To clarify, I’m not against attracting international talent. I just don’t understand why we can’t do that (with less budget allocated) AND ALSO increase Tricouncil funding to support 🇨🇦 researchers?? #budget2025
It’s insulting to tell 🇨🇦 scientists we need international scientists to run to our rescue & ensure innovation.

🇨🇦 scientists have exceeded expectations with paltry funding. If the gov funded Tricouncil > & sustainably; imagine how innovative we’d already be!! /End

I canceled classes and stayed home today to rest. I'm definitely beating the virus, but I need lots of naps between short windows of work. 😴🥱💤
I've managed to pick up a virus. Sorry Blue Jays and trick or treaters; I'm heading off to bed early to sleep this thing off.

Forcing funders to betray reviewers and applicants by disclosing disaggregated personal and confidential information serves no legitimate purpose. This is an abuse of parliamentary authority that will deeply undermine Canadian science.
I encourage you to contact your MP, the Minister of Health, and your institution. This has already been bulldozed through with a 15 day requirement to meet the request. Watching politicians vandalize scientific institutions is distressing enough next door, let's not start here.

If you don't think rando MPs (and whoever else they share it with) should have access to personal information of individual applicants, reviewers, and students, confidential data, & full applications and reviews in every Canadian research grant (funded or not), please sign.

I read the entire cursed transcript of the evidence. It includes "gems" such as "Don't you find that applying EDI criteria to research funding amounts to guiding scientific research based on ideological considerations at the expense of academic freedom?" 🤢Cdn researchers, #AcademicSky, pay attn!
Canadian researchers should be aware the there is a motion before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Science and Research to force Tricouncils to hand over disaggregated peer review data on all applications:
Applicant names, profiles, demographics
Reviewers names, profiles, comments, and scores

Aha - this was found instantly by a bot that provides a feed of world trending topics every 30 minutes. So that's useful. Now looking for trending-Canada.
Does anyone know if there's a way to change the #bluesky trending topics to be more localized? I find they're always US-centric terms and I'm wondering if they can be customized to Canada or the world.

I made a tactical error today. I got my COVID 💉and flu 💉 shots in my left arm, per usual, completely forgetting that I have tennis elbow in my right arm. Now I have no arms available to lift heavy things, where the threshold for heavy is about 2 lbs.

Chihuahua is my nemesis word, and I had one for about 8 years. I still need to say "chee-who-ah-who-ah" in my head before writing it down. Great advertisement for my doctoral-level education. 😅

I think one of the things people misunderstand about being anti-ChatGPT and related products is that they are being forced into institutions and other products and services in ways that affect all of our lives whether they work or *not* and we will all have to deal with the consequences

Godspeed to all of us returning to the classroom next week. There are parts I absolutely look forward to, but I can't shake the feeling of the marathon starting, with no breaks or off-ramps until next May. #AcademicSky

Does anyone have experience with, or comments about, the use of ambient AI scribe technology in medical settings? Are there privacy concerns? How well does it do with communication differences? (e.g., language or accents, aphasia). TIA! #AcademicSky
