Part of that question is “is the tool doing the thing?” But a bigger part of that question is “should people do that thing?” and “at what cost is this thing being done?” and “if we do that thing, what do we lose, are we willing to lose it, and if not, how can we preserve it?”

Melanie Walsh with a great point about WHERE interdisciplinary convos can take place. NLP papers often too short to include the full scope/humanities context (& sometimes result in accusations of writing *too well*) but concern that devs won’t read eg Journal of Computational Humanities. #dh2024

Oh, I love this point from @dmimno.bsky.social on what people need in encounters w/ AI: "How do we relate emotionally/support emotionally those at different stages of learning?" The intentionality inherent here would be abt tech skills yes, but more importantly encouragement, care (I thnk) #DH2024

@gabi3.bsky.social: Approaches to getting books scanned. Nichole Nomura used a band saw as part of destructive scanning; it's more effective than scissors. The LitLab team ultimately worked with a vendor to do this scanning. #DH2024

Nomura, Keane, @alixrae.bsky.social & @mattgwr.bsky.social sharing the NITTY GRITTY of assembling a corpus of 20C literary theory. They call it "slow, painful, expensive, and also unequal." I find their sharing of this process invaluable, and really important for demystifying CLS. #dh2024
