Important story featuring Dr. Oshman, who, along with fellow researchers, have examined newborn drug testing based on the birthing parent's race & ethnicity before & after recreational cannabis legalization. Docs ordered more tests for Black newborns when no test was done during pregnancy.

Just published from Dr. @loshman.bsky.social et al! New residency application signals & preferences are promising ways to help coordinators select suitable candidates. However, they didn't help them discern whether applicants truly preferred family medicine. More study is needed. michmed.org/4kRdY

🆕 Very interesting paper by @loshman.bsky.social et al. High cost of meds that assist with weight loss, and improve overall health, is a primary barrier to insurance coverage. Health plan leaders are calling on pharmaceutical companies to reduce list prices to increase equitable medication access.

New research from @kgoldmd.bsky.social et al finds that Family Med docs receive about 17 messages per patient-facing clinic hour, the highest of any primary care doc. Payment for patient care over the portal is needed so that primary care docs are still available for routine care. michmed.org/Kkbbe

Great (and updated!) piece by one of my fellow University of Michigan communicators, featuring Family Med Department Chair @philrodgersmd.bsky.social, a national advocate for better access to high-quality palliative care, including hospice care.
Back when Jimmy Carter entered hospice nearly two years ago, I interviewed a pair of Univ. of Michigan end-of-life care experts for an #explainer on what hospice is, who’s eligible, and the #healthpolicy issues surrounding it.

I just updated the piece today:

What experts wish more people knew about hospice and other end-of-life care
Hospice, palliative care, end-of-life decisions, long-term care insurance and durable power of attorney are all things people with serious health issues should think about.
