They're scrubbing the launch attempt of New Glenn this morning. Not sure when it will be made official.

Over the years, I've heard lots of folks say that they don't really know what to write for alt-text accessibility.

So ... as promised - here are some handy #Accessibility guides!

I've written these from the perspective of #SciComm material, but they can be generalised to any field.

Thinking about how many kids I went to the now-closing Simon’s Rock with-a weird school stressing critical thinking, love of knowledge, and liberal arts - *weren’t* rich. Brilliant people with scholarships.

Feels like the end of an era where you didn’t need independent wealth to study like that.

Recently travelled through LAX airport and it was way less shitty than I remembered. Even did my Global Entry interview after grabbing my luggage.

I hope the LAX experience continues to improve with the opening of the transit line. Having to use UberBlack just to be picked up curbside isn’t great.

Feels like I'm just posting to the void since I'm just getting started here, but why not. I write a weekly newsletter, and this week I write about how far away from reading and critical thinking we’ve come. It's lacking in our education, COVID learning loss, social media attention spans, all of it.
We need to get back to reading and critical thinking
Because 2024 feels different from 2016.

Wonderful visit to Sydney Zoo today. Highly recommended. I even got to pet a kangaroo (or wallaby?) that wandered onto the footpath.

Excited to be heading to Australia for a week. And no, we didn’t book this after recent news 😂

I haven’t been home since my Grandma’s funeral last year, and this time it’s under much nicer circumstances.

🧵I have just seen the most polite outright rejection of big business and hustle culture that I've ever encountered at a tiny ma and pa Japanese restaurant in rural Aotearoa New Zealand and it was so satisfying and heartwarming to see. (1)

LOVING this piece about how prevalent alcohol drinking is in animals and insects includes this gem “Male fruit flies turn to alcohol when they are rejected as a mate, while females of a closely related species become less picky about their mates and have sex with more males after imbibing” 🧪
Alcohol consumption abundant in the natural world, study finds
Range of species have ethanol in diet, normally arising through fermented fruits, sap and nectar

Another Gamma-ray burst I was thinking about was #GRB790305b

Remarkably, scientists were able to track this one as it crossed the Solar System thanks to many spacecraft at different locations.

Using this data they could triangulate a source in the LMC for an event that occurred around 3000 BCE.

This online marketing push is an odd little hat tip to the 90s, when the Patagonian toothfish was rebranded "Chilean sea bass" to make it sound more appetizing.

The rebrand was so successful that illegal overfishing devastated the species and led to the longest ocean chase in history.
Goldfish is changing its name to ‘Chilean Sea Bass.’ Here’s why | CNN Business
Goldfish crackers are synonymous with hungry kids, but the company is betting that a sophisticated name change could expand that audience.

Taking a class on Adobe Illustrator this semester. Thought I'd put it into practice and made a ... logo thing? 🤷 Was trying to capture the themes of space, Earth and connection.

I've learnt a lot so far, but I have a long way to go!

One positive to come out of COVID: it validated that most of the general public were competent enough to perform at-home lateral flow tests. Hopefully reducing burdens on primary care now that diagnostics can be done by individuals.
Thanks to newly approved at-home rapid tests, you can simultaneously determine whether your symptoms are #COVID-19 or the #flu.

They're called multiplex tests because they can analyze for multiple viruses with just one swab up your nose.

A quick explainer from researchers who test the tests 🩺
Is it COVID-19? Flu? At-home rapid tests could help you and your doctor decide on a treatment plan
A fever and a nasty cough can be symptoms of a range of respiratory illnesses. An antigen test that narrows down the culprits can speed up diagnosis and recovery.
