Every president of both parties going back generations subscribed to the principle that a president doesn't pick the press corps that is allowed in the room to ask him questions. Trump has just declared that he will.
The message is clear. Given that the White House has already kicked one news organization out of the pool because of coverage it does not like, it is making certain everyone else knows that the rest of us can be barred too if the president does not like our questions or stories.
Having served as a Moscow correspondent in the early days of Putin's reign, this reminds me of how the Kremlin took over its own press pool and made sure that only compliant journalists were given access.

Steht zu hoffen, dass sich die Stimmen des demokratischen Lagers noch einmal leicht drehen. Plus zwei Prozent bei #Grüne = 15 Prozent, das wären 0,2 Prozent mehr als bei der letzten #BTW - und damit die einzige der drei Ampelparteien, die sich verbessern würde. Unter 13 darf es nicht fallen.

Die AfD hat das Glück, das Becken für unglückliche, rechtslehnende Wähler zu sein, denn wäre es anders wären die Umfragewerte schrecklich. Ihre BTW25-Kampagne ist miserabel in allen Belangen.

Vor allem könnte es sehr gut sein, dass Merz sich in dieser Woche den Weg ins Kanzleramt doch noch verbaut hat. Denn wenn SPD und Grüne schlau sind, werden sie nach der Wahl sagen: Natürlich schließen wir eine Koalition mit der Union - aber nicht unter einem Kanzler Merz.
Man muss einmal festhalten, dass, egal, wie man zu ihm steht, Friedrich Merz diese Woche alles falsch gemacht hat, was er hat falsch machen können. Nicht nur eine schwarze Woche für die Demokratie, sondern auch für den Konservatismus.
