Have just ID'd my first Ephydrid from our survey trip to S'Albufera Nature Reserve in Mallorca. Thanks to @sjthomasbotany.bsky.social and David Gibbs for the recent @dipteristsforum.bsky.social Ephydrid workshop, the key is great! Thanks to @davebriceflies.bsky.social for his patient tutorage too.

On Monday our instagram account was hacked and then deleted. We received a ransom note to recover it; obviously we couldn't and wouldn't pay, and therefore lost thousands of followers. Latest Family determined from s'Albufereta in Mallorca 2023. Dolichopodidae done! Quite challenging in places but here is Thinophilus flavipalpis, quite a set of palps! New to the Balearics I think unless anyone has more up to date info. ID work done in the UK too! www.dipteraid.co.uk

In Puerto Rico there are 29 species of Chiton & its thought the area with the greatest diversity of polyplacophores in the Caribbean.

I believe this one is Acanthopleura granulata, commonly called the West Indian fuzzy chiton (as if I could love them any more!!)

So. Many. Fiddler crabs

Left/right - it doesn’t matter what side but one is always an enlarged claw or major cheliped, & they are used for drumming/waving when they see a female.

The smaller one is for feeding so they have to work twice as hard as the females who have 2 similar small sized claws
