We can't solve the triple planetary crisis without multilateral cooperation. But we have to get it right.

As the #JuneClimateMeetings come to an end, some thoughts on the need and motivation for a deep reform of the UN climate talks.

Ever stronger calls for better climate multilateralism at the UN climate talks in Bonn
With multilateralism under attack and an ever accelerating climate crisis, more than once I have been asked (and asked myself) why attending the UN climate talks still matters. 30 years of negotiation...

📢 The climate talks #COP30 in Belém conclude with a largely empty deal:
❌ No halt to deforestation,
❌ No fossil fuel phaseout, and
❌ No climate finance at the scale the crisis demands.

📣 At #COP30, one thing is clear: The framework that guides the climate talks is falling short!

Colombian minister Irene Vélez Torres goes straight to the point while explaining why #FossilFuels aren’t COP30 text: Consensus kills ambition‼️

#COP31 is now expected to be held in Turkey after Australia dropped its bid to host the event, in return for its minister chairing the talks.

Choosing a host shouldn't be a saga. The decision should be made based on their commitment to #ClimateJustice, science & #HumanRights.

🔥 Spot on remarks by Colombia minister Irene Vélez Torres 🔥

UN climate talks continue ending up in lowest-common-denominator-outcomes failing to uphold legal obligations because of the way the process is built.

Consensus kills ambition. Reform is urgent. #TheCOPWeNeed
Colombian minister Irene Vélez Torres explains her views on fossil fuels being excluded from the COP30 text.

"The problem is, right now, the method [is] only of consensus”, with “the most ambitious agenda” ending up “eliminated”.

She added: “We still believe that a change in the text is possible."

Week 2 has begun at #COP30 with unacceptable measures being taken.
A #UNFCCC letter triggered a massive security escalation in Belém—intimidating Indigenous Peoples & silencing peaceful protest.

Cambodia’s leadership strengthens the push for a global agreement to end expansion and scale finance for a just, people-centred transition. ✊🌎
#Cambodia just became the 18th country to officially support the #FossilFuelTreaty! 🇰🇭

At #COP30 in Belém, Cambodia affirmed their commitment to a fast, fair and financed global transition aligned with a low-carbon, climate-resilient future.

This is the result of a UNFCCC letter.

We joined 170+ orgs in calling on the UNFCCC to de-escalate, listen & protect the right to peaceful protest.

#COP30 does business as usual on land that belongs to #IndigenousPeoples, while the #UNFCCC excludes their voices & denies their right to participate.

This week’s actions by Munduruku Indigenous Peoples from Brazil were powerful reactions to deep-rooted rights violations ignored for far too long.

Once again, the #UNFCCC sidelines #IndigenousPeoples, denying them effective participation in the very spaces where their future is negotiated.

On the 1⃣ day of #COP30, the #LossAndDamageFund opened the call for proposals for its start-up phase.

#COP30 must give guidance to scale the Fund in line with needs & to center justice, rights, without this the Fund risks becoming a climate bank with neither money nor remedy.
