I have a new essay out this morning about Black History Month, remembering in a moment when those in power want us to forget, and the importance of seeing people in the past as people www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
Black History Month Is Radical Now
A nation that wants to forget its past must be reminded of all of it.

we weren’t negative enough and now no-one gets to have ram or hard drives
lot of negativity towards AI lately, but consider :

are these tools ethical or environmentally sustainable? No.

*but* do they enable great things that people want? Also no.

*but* are they being made by well meaning people for good reasons? Once again, no.

maybe you're not being negative *enough*

it may take 3 years. It may take 13 years. But we can hold the elites accountable. And if they're dead, we can dig up their bones.

But it only happens if we make it happen, which will take sweeping away the current obstacles to justice, including structural ones like SCOTUS, pardon power, the filibuster, the cowardice of democratic leadership, and more. It's possible, but we'll have to build so much political will ...

what I want people to feel, when they look at South Korea and the UK and Brazil holding elites accountable, is that it's possible here too. Elect true leaders this year and in 28, empowered - but also driven by us, the people - to hold the criminals accountable for their crimes. It's possible.

They still use 'Luddite' as a smear word, huh?

Young lefties have long been the vanguard of tech savvyness. The fact that this group is fairly anti LLM should be a signal to everyone else, not an excuse to scold this group for not seeing what's coming.

I'm gonna repeat my comment.

Talking about nonexistent "super intelligent" machines is like talking about the Cookie Monster rather than corporations creating real things causing harm. A non existent machine god bringing apocalypse or utopia is a framing that is harmful. Period.

Thread. Elite accountability is hard, but not impossible. This is the most acute form--criminal wrongdoing. There are other processes for policy or governing debacles (congressional oversight, a thing we used to do; political costs, ditto). Not fast or easy, but processes that need revitalizing.

I love that most wrestlers who keep kayfabe on social media are jerks or weirdos and Willow can do it effortlessly because her gimmick is Nicest Woman Alive (Who Will Also Punch You) and by all accounts that's just what she's like all the time
I saw that today marks the start of Ramadan, Mardi Gras, and Lunar New Year. That means like HALF of the world is celebrating

Things have generally been feeling progressively bleaker and heavier, so hopefully we can all grab some good vibes today while they’re free flowing💖
