One of few alternative models of computation discovered/invented around the same time - the other ones being Post production systems (Emil L. Post, 1943) and untyped lambda calculus (Alonzo Church, 1936 - Turing's thesis supervisor). It is striking how elegant they all are.
In 1936, Alan Turing conceived of hypothetical machines that could help mathematically model the process of computation. Built from just three parts, Turing machines can in principle compute the answer to any solvable problem. www.quantamagazine.org/busy-beaver-...
