What does the Musk-Trump episode teach us about the nexus of wealth and power in democratic governance?

🧵
Wealth Has Always Offered Outsized Influence in U.S. Politics
The centrality of wealth in U.S. politics under Trump is more a sign of continuity than change. His falling out with Elon Musk only underscores this point.

They have never been interested in a ceasefire. They are interested in destroying Ukraine
On Kremlin TV, Putin intimate Solov'yov says Russia so encouraged by Trump taking their side no longer see need for ceasefire.

"No, there won’t be any ceasefire. Our idea of peace is everything happening as we see fit”

Then plays a clip of Vance slamming Ukraine.

Acquiring nukes quickly becoming almost conventional wisdom in some European states.

But access to nuclear weapons is not a cure-all, whether via extended France-UK deterrence, or new national/regional programmes.

Can all agree on nuclear doctrine? & a huge conventional military challenge remains.

NEW BLOG: More of the same or a new opportunity for British-Irish Relations?

The first annual UK-Ireland Summit is due to take place this month. @conorjkelly.bsky.social and @etaintannam.bsky.social argue that political relationships have improved since Brexit, but challenges remain.
More of the same or a new opportunity for British-Irish Relations?
Conor J. Kelly and Etain Tannam discuss the new Irish coalition’s programme for government and what it means for UK-Irish relations. They conclude that while the disagreements between London and Dublin that characterised the Brexit period are dissipating and political relationships have noticeably improved in recent years, several challenges remain which will require strict adherence to the structures of the 1998 Belfast/Good Friday Agreement.
