Prime Minister Carney’s joint statement with the leaders of the UK and France threatening “concrete actions” over Israel’s starvation of Gaza and expanded onslaught is a welcome change of tune.

We are aware of increasing efforts to weaponize the law to repress support for Palestinian rights. Even where unsuccessful, lawfare can have a chilling effect on free speech. We won’t let frivolous lawsuits stop our movement–but we can’t do it alone.
As pro-Palestinian organizers face arrests and deportations in the U.S., some Canadian lawyers are taking notes.

Shiri Pasternak, Jillian Rogin & Joshua Sealy-Harrington write about the new push for 'lawfare' to stifle criticism of Israel in Canada. breachmedia.ca/palestine-so...

"Of all the professions, lawyers should be the most ardent protectors of these rights. It’s a shame to see some Canadian lawyers actively eroding these values."
First, @advocates-soc.bsky.social uninvites
Tareq Hadhad as guest speaker; second, they cancel their gala rather than rise to responsibility to remedy their own attack on free speech. Writing in Open Canada, @amandaghahremani.com & I call on them to meaningfully recommit to defending free speech.
#Canada’s largest legal society disinvited a prominent Syrian-Canadian entrepreneur + peace activist from its annual gala because he called the violence in #Gaza a #genocide. @alexneve.bsky.social and I explain how this is a troubling attack on free speech.

Prime Minister Carney’s claim that his government is maintaining an arms embargo on Israel is not true. Canada continues to funnel weapons to Israel through the United States.

Canada’s selective application of its anti-terrorism laws is evident: it has not designated groups supporting the IDF as terrorist entities, despite extensively documented human rights violations. #Samidoun

It is Mother’s Day in much of the Arab world today. But this week, Palestinian mothers are living the worst nightmare imaginable, with 200 children in Gaza killed by Israel since March 17th. Canada must act now to fulfill it’s duty under international law to prevent genocide.

Canada’s failure to act to prevent genocide not only breaches international law but also charter rights. Canadian-Palestinians like the plaintiffs in our case, Hany and Tamer, have seen their rights continuously violated.

According to the government of Canada, “Due process is the principle that the government must respect all of the legal rights a person is entitled to under the law.”
This poses a troubling question: Why was #Samidoun not entitled to the above?

What does due process look like? Due process includes an unbiased decision-maker, notice of the decision, and above all, the opportunity to respond. Canada's terror listing process raises serious concerns about these principles. #Samidoun

The detention of Yves Engler on Friday in Montreal reflects the tide of over-policing and repression that Palestinians and solidarity advocates have long faced, particularly in the past 15 months.
